Japan's PLAY Buys Cloud Playout Vendor Veset for Asia Expansion

PLAY, INC. is a subsidiary of Nippon Television Network, Japan's largest commercial broadcaster, which gives Veset's Nimbus platform a direct institutional anchor in the Japanese market. COBALT, the law firm that advised PLAY on the transaction, confirmed that Veset had clients in 20 countries and more than 200 TV channels running on its Latvian-developed content transmission software at the time of the deal. That scale of existing deployment means the acquisition was not a technology tuck-in but a full operating-company purchase with a live customer base spanning Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

The deal structure itself reveals PLAY's strategic intent. PLAY had taken an approximately 10 percent stake in Veset International Limited in December 2020 before executing a share purchase agreement on February 1, 2023, to acquire the remaining shares. The stated purpose was to strengthen KRONOS, PLAY's SaaS cloud playout service, which already used a customized version of Nimbus for its video playout engine. PLAY cited the need for more aggressive feature development and stable service delivery as reasons to move from investor to full owner, signaling that KRONOS's roadmap is now directly coupled to Veset's engineering output.

Latvian public media reported the acquisition as a notable outbound technology deal for the country's startup ecosystem. LSM English noted that Veset was co-founded by Gatis Gailis alongside his father, former Latvian Prime Minister Māris Gailis, plus Jānis Vaišļans and Jānis Krampāns, giving the company unusual political and business visibility in the Baltic region. The deal size was not disclosed, but the transaction positions Veset as one of the few Latvian-developed broadcast technology platforms to be absorbed by a major Asian media group, and it raises the question of whether Nimbus's existing European and Middle Eastern customers will continue to receive the same level of independent support now that strategic direction flows from Tokyo.
