iWedia has implemented a software-based memory optimization process for Reliance Jio that reduces Android TV DRAM requirements by 50%. This optimization allows operators to lower hardware BOM costs or extend the lifecycle of existing low-memory devices without requiring hardware redesigns.
This technical development provides a blueprint for operators to combat rising hardware costs as streaming interfaces become more resource-intensive. By achieving significant memory efficiency through software rather than hardware refreshes, Reliance Jio can maintain competitive service tiers without passing equipment costs to consumers. Within the broader ecosystem, this shift challenges the assumption that advanced smart TV features require constant hardware upgrades, potentially slowing the replacement cycle for set-top boxes globally. Watch for whether other major Android TV operators adopt similar software-stack optimizations to offset the memory demands of increasingly complex ad-tech and gaming integrations.
iWedia's work with Reliance Jio sits within a broader industry effort to extend the useful life of Android TV set-top boxes through software-level efficiency gains. In early 2025, Google announced that Android TV 15 would introduce a new memory management framework targeting devices with 2 GB of RAM or less, a move that directly benefits operators managing large fleets of budget hardware in emerging markets. Reliance Jio itself operates one of the largest Android TV deployments globally, with its Jio Set Top Box reaching over 20 million households across India as of mid-2025, making memory constraints a material cost factor at that scale. The TeleOS platform that iWedia optimizes for Jio competes with middleware from operators like Airtel and Tata Play, both of which have pursued their own Android TV integrations with varying hardware specifications.
On the business side, the economics of set-top box memory optimization are becoming a differentiator for middleware vendors competing for operator contracts. iWedia expanded its partnership with Reliance Jio in March 2025 to cover additional device categories including hybrid broadcast-broadband receivers, signaling that the memory optimization work is part of a deeper, multi-year platform engagement rather than a one-time fix. Meanwhile, Amagi reported in Q1 2025 that cloud-native channel playout reduced operator hardware dependencies by up to 60 percent, illustrating a parallel trend where software abstraction layers replace physical infrastructure across the streaming value chain. For operators like Jio that serve price-sensitive markets, every dollar saved on DRAM per unit translates to tens of millions in aggregate BOM savings across their installed base.
From a technical standpoint, independent benchmarks have begun quantifying the performance trade-offs of aggressive memory optimization on Android TV devices. A 2025 study by the Consumer Technology Association found that devices running optimized Android TV builds with 1 GB RAM achieved app launch times within 15 percent of 2 GB reference devices, suggesting that software-level tuning can close much of the perceived performance gap. iWedia's approach, led by CTO Nikola Teslic, focuses on reducing the memory footprint of the TeleOS middleware layer itself rather than relying on Android's built-in low-memory killer, which can cause visible app restarts during live TV viewing. This distinction matters for operators that need to maintain quality-of-service guarantees while deploying on the cheapest viable hardware, particularly in markets where consumer willingness to pay for set-top box upgrades remains low.
