Former Pact CEO John McVay joins AIMICI AI training platform

McVay’s transition from a major trade body to a specialized technology platform suggests that the UK screen sector is moving toward formalizing AI governance. By focusing on accredited certifications, AIMICI aims to resolve market paralysis caused by misinformation and unclear risk management. This move connects to the broader streaming ecosystem's need for transparent production workflows that satisfy both creative labor concerns and technical efficiency requirements. As independent producers face increasing pressure to integrate generative tools, standardized training provides a framework for responsible adoption. Watch for whether these ScreenSkills-accredited standards become a mandatory requirement for UK public service broadcaster commissions or independent production insurance policies over the next 12 months.

AIMICI operates within a rapidly expanding UK ecosystem of AI training and workforce development initiatives aimed at the creative industries. The platform is backed by Innovate UK and Bournemouth University, positioning it alongside other publicly funded efforts to formalize AI competency in media production. ScreenSkills launched its own AI skills framework in early 2025, offering structured training modules for screen professionals that cover everything from prompt engineering to ethical deployment of generative tools in post-production. McVay's appointment to AIMICI's board gives the platform direct access to the independent production sector's leadership networks, a constituency that Pact represented during his tenure as CEO from 2010 to 2024. The convergence of these initiatives suggests the UK is building a layered certification architecture where multiple bodies compete to define what responsible AI practice looks like for producers, editors, and VFX artists.

On the regulatory and business front, the UK government has been actively shaping the environment in which platforms like AIMICI operate. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology published its AI Opportunities Action Plan in January 2025, which recommended sector-specific skills frameworks and called for industry-led standards to govern AI adoption in creative fields. That policy direction aligns with AIMICI's mission of creating accredited, verifiable competency certifications rather than leaving AI training to unregulated online courses. Meanwhile, John McVay stepped down from Pact in 2024 after more than a decade leading the trade body, during which time he oversaw significant growth in the UK independent production sector and navigated the early policy debates around AI in content creation. His move to AIMICI rather than remaining within Pact's orbit indicates a strategic bet that specialized certification bodies will carry more weight than general trade associations in shaping AI governance for the screen sector.

From a technical and benchmarking perspective, AIMICI's Responsible AI training standard sits within a broader international effort to measure and certify AI literacy in creative workflows. The European Broadcasting Union published guidelines in late 2024 on AI competency requirements for broadcast professionals, establishing baseline knowledge areas including data provenance, model transparency, and human oversight checkpoints. These EBU guidelines have been referenced by several European public broadcasters when designing internal AI training programs. In parallel, , underscoring the scale of the skills gap that AIMICI and similar platforms are attempting to close. The Responsible AI training standard that AIMICI is developing through ScreenSkills accreditation could become a benchmark that other national screen bodies adopt, particularly if it demonstrates measurable improvements in production teams' ability to assess and mitigate AI-related risks.
