A new report from the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM) highlights how audience fragmentation across streaming and broadcast platforms is complicating sports media measurement. The paper identifies nine key challenges, including cross-platform deduplication and unauthorized streaming, that are impacting rights pricing and advertising investment.
The inability to accurately deduplicate audiences across linear and digital environments directly undermines the premium pricing of live sports. When reach is uncertain, buyers demand a discount to offset the risk of over-counting or missing viewers, which could stall the rapid growth of streaming-exclusive rights deals. This friction forces a transition away from traditional ratings toward identity-enabled frameworks and advanced sponsorship analytics that track business outcomes rather than just eyeballs. As platforms compete for high-stakes contracts, the adoption of these new measurement standards will determine which services can prove the highest ROI to advertisers. Watch for whether major leagues mandate specific hybrid measurement models in upcoming domestic rights negotiations.
The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement has been pushing for unified cross-platform measurement standards since its founding, but the sports vertical remains the most acute pressure point. In early 2026, Nielsen announced it had expanded its Nielsen One cross-platform measurement solution to include out-of-home viewing data for live sports events, a move that directly addresses one of the nine challenges CIMM identified: the inability to capture viewing that occurs outside the home. Nielsen's expansion followed complaints from major sports rights holders that traditional panel-based measurement was undercounting total audiences by as much as 15% for marquee events like the Super Bowl and FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The business stakes around sports media measurement are escalating rapidly as streaming platforms commit record sums to live rights. Amazon secured exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football through 2033 in a deal valued at approximately $1.1 billion per year, while Apple's Major League Soccer partnership and Netflix's entry into live boxing and NFL Christmas Day games have further fragmented the sports viewing landscape. Each new exclusive streaming deal increases the urgency for advertisers to verify that their impressions are not being double-counted across platforms or missed entirely when viewers switch between linear and digital environments. The measurement gap creates a direct financial risk: if advertisers cannot confirm unique reach, they will apply a discount to CPMs, which in turn pressures the rights fees that leagues and broadcasters depend on.
On the technical side, identity-based measurement frameworks are emerging as the most promising path toward solving cross-platform deduplication for live sports. iSpot.tv reported in mid-2026 that its attention-based measurement methodology had been adopted by more than 40 national sports advertisers seeking to move beyond gross rating points toward outcome-linked metrics. Meanwhile, the Joint Industry Committee on Video Audience Measurement, which CIMM helped establish, published updated guidelines in July 2026 requiring that any certified cross-platform measurement solution must demonstrate deduplication accuracy within a 5% margin of error for live sports content. These technical benchmarks represent the concrete standards that will determine whether the measurement ecosystem can keep pace with the speed at which sports rights are migrating to streaming platforms.
