The Blackmagic Cloud Backup 8 is an 8-bay rack-mount storage unit featuring 10G Ethernet connectivity and HDMI monitoring designed for high-end post-production workflows. The device allows for independent drive management and integrates with DaVinci Resolve and Blackmagic Cloud to provide a cost-effective alternative to subscription-based cloud storage.
The immediate implication is a significant reduction in operational overhead for boutique studios handling data-heavy 8K RAW and photogrammetry assets. By moving away from subscription-based cloud models toward a localized, sync-capable hardware solution, firms can maintain high-speed 10G access while retaining private control over their media libraries. Within the broader ecosystem, this move pressures traditional cloud storage providers to justify high monthly fees against increasingly capable private hardware that bridges the gap between local and remote collaboration. Watch for whether Blackmagic expands this independent-bay architecture to smaller 4-bay units to target the growing mid-market of independent content creators.
Blackmagic Design launched the Cloud Backup 8 at NAB 2025 in April, positioning it as a rack-mount alternative to subscription-based cloud storage for post-production teams. The company announced the product at booth SL216 with a launch price of US$1,495, emphasizing its 8 independent hot-swappable SATA bays, built-in 4-port 10G Ethernet switch, and direct sync to Blackmagic Cloud for DaVinci Resolve collaborative projects. The unit supports up to 200 simultaneous computer connections via SMB 3 Multichannel protocol, making it viable for mid-size studios that need shared media access without a dedicated SAN administrator.
The pricing model directly challenges recurring cloud storage fees that have become a significant line item for facilities handling 8K RAW, EXR sequences, and photogrammetry datasets. Blackmagic's approach mirrors its broader strategy of bundling hardware with free software to undercut subscription competitors. The Cloud Backup 8 integrates with Blackmagic Cloud's proxy-first sync workflow, transferring lightweight proxies before camera originals, which allows distributed editorial teams to begin work immediately while full-resolution media replicates in the background. This architecture positions the device as both a local archive and a global sync node, reducing reliance on third-party cloud providers for multi-site collaboration.
On the drive side, the unit accepts any 3.5-inch SATA hard disk, giving facilities flexibility in capacity planning. Seagate's IronWolf Pro line, available in capacities up to 30TB per drive, is a common choice for NAS and DAS enclosures in media workflows due to its 550TB-per-year workload rating and rotational vibration sensors designed for multi-bay environments. Blackmagic's tech specs confirm the Cloud Backup 8 uses a bring-your-own-drive model with ExFAT or HFS+ formatting, meaning facilities can scale from 8TB to 240TB total capacity simply by swapping drives. The 180W power draw and dual internal power supplies with IEC C14 inputs make it suitable for standard rack installations alongside network switches and other studio infrastructure.
