The 3GPP has finalized the roadmap for Release 21, which includes the first normative specifications for 6G wireless technology, with freeze dates beginning in 2027. The FirstNet Authority actively participated in the Singapore plenary meetings to ensure mission-critical video, AI/ML, and integrated sensing requirements are incorporated into these evolving global standards.
The transition from theoretical studies to normative specifications signals the start of the 6G hardware and infrastructure investment cycle. For the streaming industry, the move toward integrated sensing and AI-driven radio management promises higher bandwidth efficiency and reduced latency for mobile video delivery. While 5G-Advanced continues to bridge the gap, the standardized timeline allows chipset manufacturers and network vendors to align R&D with a fixed 2029-2030 commercial window. Watch for the September 2026 meeting in Madrid, where 3GPP is expected to address critical 5G-to-6G migration and standalone architecture options previously deferred in Singapore.
The formalization of the Release 21 roadmap aligns 3GPP with the ITU-R IMT-2030 timetable, which requires global technology proposals by early 2029. Per Qualcomm (June 2026), 6G is expected to support up to 400 MHz channel bandwidth from the network perspective, a significant increase from the typical 100 MHz limit in current 5G mid-band deployments. This shift is driving a surge in intellectual property activity; according to PatSnap (July 2026), Ericsson currently leads the sector with over 4,800 patent families, followed by LG Electronics and Nokia, as companies rush to establish foundational IP roles ahead of the normative freeze. Concurrent with 3GPP’s move, the O-RAN Alliance has initiated its own 6G study items to ensure open fronthaul interfaces remain interoperable with the emerging standard. According to TechNexus (June 2026), while the air interface remains under 3GPP’s purview, O-RAN is prioritizing architecture that supports AI/ML data transfer frameworks and energy-efficient ‘Ambient IoT’ sensors that harvest energy from solar or wind sources. Commercial readiness is also accelerating through physical layer trials. At MWC 2026, Qualcomm and Ericsson demonstrated 6G prototypes utilizing the 7-8 GHz centimeter-wave spectrum, aiming to improve uplink coverage for interactive mobile AI applications. Despite this progress, ABI Research (June 2026) notes that regional fragmentation persists, with the Asia-Pacific region currently accounting for 54% of global 6G radio deployments and trial activity, potentially leading to staggered global rollouts starting in late 2029.
