2026 election political ad spend to hit record $11.6 billion

The massive influx of political capital into CTV will likely force commercial advertisers in retail, automotive, and healthcare to pivot toward omnichannel strategies to maintain reach. As political committees leverage coordinated spending to secure lower linear rates, the resulting capacity crunch will accelerate the migration of traditional brand budgets toward premium digital video and the open internet. This shift tests the scalability of CTV environments during peak demand periods like back-to-school and holiday sales. Watch for shifting spending forecasts in battleground states like Ohio, where projections have already increased by $309 million, to serve as early indicators of local advertising forecast scarcity.

The Trade Desk has positioned itself as a primary beneficiary of the political advertising surge flowing into connected television. In its most recent quarterly earnings, the company reported that CTV represented its fastest-growing channel with revenue up more than 30% year over year, a trajectory that political spending is expected to accelerate further. The platform's Koa AI engine, which optimizes campaign delivery across channels, has become central to how advertisers navigate inventory scarcity during high-demand periods. The Trade Desk's ZUMA initiative, which integrates CTV inventory directly into programmatic pipelines, gives buyers access to premium streaming environments that were previously only available through direct deals, a structural advantage when linear capacity tightens during election season.

Competitive pressure in political CTV is intensifying as multiple platforms court campaign budgets. Nokia and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison announced a GPU-accelerated AI-RAN partnership in Indonesia on June 8, expanding the Nokia-NVIDIA architecture already adopted by T-Mobile US, SoftBank, and Vodafone. This competitive dynamic mirrors what is happening in ad tech: platforms that can demonstrate measurable performance advantages during peak political cycles are winning outsized share. The Trade Desk's omnichannel approach, spanning CTV, audio, display, and native, gives it a structural edge over CTV-only platforms like Roku social-first ad creative or Hulu when advertisers need to redistribute budgets away from constrained linear inventory. Political consultants increasingly demand unified measurement strategies, a capability that programmatic platforms with unified identity solutions can deliver more effectively than walled gardens.

Technical infrastructure and measurement capabilities will determine which platforms capture the largest share of the $2.7 billion CTV political forecast. Ericsson launched its AI in RAN commercial software subscription on June 11th, claiming up to 20% higher downlink throughput and up to 10% better spectral efficiency across more than 15 live deployments. Similarly, ad tech platforms must prove that their delivery infrastructure can handle the burst traffic patterns unique to political campaigns, which concentrate spending in narrow geographic markets and short time windows. The Trade Desk's investment in identity resolution through UID2.0 and its partnerships with major streaming services position it to capture political budgets that require both precision targeting and brand-safe environments. As the 2026 midterms approach, the ability to shift spend dynamically between linear, CTV, and digital channels in response to real-time inventory availability will separate winning platforms from those that lose political dollars to direct-sold environments.
