WunderKIND tackles retail media fragmentation with new CTV ad formats

WunderKIND tackles retail media fragmentation with new CTV ad formats
Beet.TV

WunderKIND is expanding its behaviorally triggered ad formats into connected TV, reporting significant performance gains for clients like Ulta Beauty. The company is positioning its data-layer technology to address industry fragmentation as retail media networks move toward greater interoperability with platforms like DV360.

Key Takeaways

  • Ulta Beauty holiday campaign saw a 79% decrease in cost per store visit using programmatic CTV pause ads
  • U.S. omnichannel retail media ad spending is projected to reach $71.67 billion by 2026
  • Walmart Connect audiences are now accessible via Google DV360, signaling a shift toward interoperability
  • WunderKIND reports a 54% higher conversion rate for store visits compared to industry benchmarks

Why It Matters

The integration of retail data into CTV environments marks a shift from siloed walled gardens toward a more liquid programmatic ecosystem. By enabling interoperability between retailers like Walmart and platforms like The Trade Desk, advertisers can finally activate high-intent behavioral data at the scale required for national streaming campaigns. This transition reduces the friction of manual optimization across disparate retail media networks, allowing for more precise attribution of digital spend to physical store visits. As these pipes become standardized, the industry must now prepare for the rise of agentic commerce, where AI bots may soon replace human browsing patterns in the purchasing funnel.

Additional Context

WunderKIND operates within a rapidly consolidating retail media landscape where interoperability has become the central challenge. The Trade Desk has been a key driver of standardization efforts, and Claire Wyatt, GM of business development and retail sector lead at The Trade Desk, acknowledged in a June 2026 Beet.TV interview that measurement remains a persistent frustration across retail media networks, noting that the industry has not agreed on what closing the loop between an ad impression and an actual purchase actually means in practice. That structural gap is precisely the problem WunderKIND's data-layer technology targets, using behavioral triggers to connect retail first-party signals to CTV inventory across multiple networks.

On the measurement and standards side, the industry is moving toward unified frameworks that would benefit platforms like WunderKIND. The IAB and MRC jointly published retail media measurement guidelines in January 2024, developed by a working group that included representatives from Ulta Beauty, The Trade Desk, and Google, establishing principles for ads appearing onsite, offsite, online, and in-store. IAB Europe updated its Commerce Media Measurement Standards to Version 2 in September 2025, adding a refined measurement funnel, specific definitions for gross and net sales, and key metrics for the quick commerce sector. AdExchanger reported that retail media's next phase depends on full-funnel measurement, with projections suggesting in-store retail media ad spend alone will surpass $1 billion by 2029, yet confidence in measurement has not kept pace with this rapid expansion.

From a technical and competitive standpoint, WunderKIND's approach of triggering CTV ads based on real-time behavioral signals positions it alongside other players racing to provide connective tissue between retail data and open-web inventory. Brian Monahan, SVP of Retail Media at Albertsons Media Collective, described retail media as a three-legged stool of offsite, onsite, and in-store and emphasized that incrementality and common standards are critical to trusted measurement. Wyatt at The Trade Desk similarly argued that basic ROAS figures do not answer whether advertising is actually moving the needle, insisting that an incremental ROAS number is what matters. This industry-wide push toward incrementality-based evaluation creates a favorable environment for WunderKIND's model of activating high-intent behavioral segments in real time rather than relying on static audience lists.
