The US military has disabled mobile advertising identifiers (MAIDs) on service-issued devices to mitigate national security risks associated with the programmatic advertising ecosystem. The move follows reports that commercially available location data from data brokers was being used to track and target military personnel in the Middle East.
The military's decision to disable these trackers highlights a critical vulnerability in the programmatic advertising supply chain where granular location data is easily weaponized. For the broader streaming and ad-tech ecosystem, this signals increasing regulatory and security scrutiny over how mobile advertising identifiers are harvested and resold by third-party data brokers. While disabling these IDs limits bulk data sales, technical experts like Zach Edwards note that sophisticated actors can still triangulate locations through network data and device metadata. Industry stakeholders should watch for potential Pentagon-wide mandates that could further restrict device usage or data transmission protocols for personnel in high-risk regions.
The US military's decision to disable mobile advertising identifiers on service-issued devices follows a pattern of escalating concern across federal agencies about commercial location data exposure. In January 2024, Senator Ron Wyden sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission urging enforcement action against data brokers selling military personnel location data, citing reporting that revealed precise movement patterns of service members at sensitive installations. The letter specifically called out the programmatic advertising supply chain as a vector through which adversaries could acquire geolocation intelligence without hacking any system. This congressional pressure preceded the Pentagon's operational response and signals that legislative oversight of ad-tech data practices is intensifying.
Decryptads, the data broker identified in reporting on military location tracking, operates within a broader ecosystem of mobile data intermediaries that have faced increasing regulatory and commercial pressure. The US Army in 2024 banned the use of commercial fitness trackers and location-sharing apps on government devices in operational areas, a policy that expanded to cover advertising identifiers as the threat model broadened. Meanwhile, Zach Edwards, a digital advertising researcher, has documented how mobile advertising identifiers can be combined with other device signals to reconstruct precise location histories even after ID resets, demonstrating that disabling MAIDs alone does not eliminate tracking risk. The Federal Trade Commission has separately pursued enforcement actions against data brokers, including a 2023 settlement with X-Mode Social over deceptive data collection practices involving sensitive locations.
The technical challenge of securing mobile devices in military environments extends beyond advertising identifiers into the broader device management and network telemetry stack. The Defense Innovation Board published recommendations in 2024 for hardening mobile device ecosystems against commercial data exploitation, including restricting background data transmission and auditing third-party SDKs embedded in applications. For the ad-tech industry, the military's action reinforces a trend toward treating mobile advertising identifiers as sensitive personal data subject to access controls, a classification that Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework already enforces for iOS users since 2021, and that Google has pursued through its Privacy Sandbox initiative for Android. The convergence of national security imperatives and consumer privacy regulation is narrowing the operational space for EU lawmakers urge Google ad-tech breakup across both government and commercial contexts.
The US military has disabled mobile advertising identifiers on service-issued devices to prevent the tracking of personnel in the Middle East. This action addresses national security vulnerabilities within the programmatic advertising supply chain, where granular location data is often harvested and sold by third-party brokers to potential adversaries.
The military disabled these identifiers to mitigate national security risks after reports indicated that commercially available location data was being used to track and target American personnel in the Middle East.
The US Army began blocking advertising IDs on Android and Apple devices in February 2026, followed by the US Air Force in July 2026, and the US Special Operations Command, which disabled trackers on Windows-based devices.
No. According to researcher Zach Edwards, sophisticated actors can still triangulate locations using network data and other device metadata even after advertising identifiers are disabled or reset.
Senator Ron Wyden and Representative Pat Harrigan are calling for a Pentagon investigation into the vulnerabilities associated with the trade of location data.
