Warner Bros. Discovery reported Q2 streaming revenue of $3.08 billion with $512 million in EBITDA, bolstered by performance of key HBO titles. These results were offset by significant revenue declines in the company's global linear TV networks and studio divisions, resulting in an 11% overall quarterly revenue decrease.
WBD is successfully pivoting to a profitable streaming model, but the speed of its legacy TV decay is currently outpacing those gains. The 27% drop in linear ad revenue underscores the massive financial hole left by the exit of NBA programming, which historically buoyed the company's cable networks. This imbalance increases the pressure on the pending Paramount Skydance merger to provide necessary scale and cost synergies. However, with a U.S. antitrust trial now delayed until March 2027, WBD must navigate a precarious eighteen-month window of standalone operations with a high debt load. Watch for upcoming international Max launches in the UK and Germany to see if global expansion can compensate for domestic linear erosion.
The loss of NBA rights remains the central headwind for WBD’s linear business. Following a protracted legal battle, WBD recently settled with the league in November 2024 to maintain a non-live content relationship for 11 years, according to Sportcal. While the settlement allows WBD to distribute NBA highlights and produce original programming like 'Inside the NBA' for other networks, the absence of live game broadcasts has significantly diminished its leverage during cable carriage negotiations and upfront ad sales. Per Front Office Sports in August 2026, the removal of NBA rights fees did improve linear operating expenses by 30%, but this margin relief has not been enough to offset the double-digit revenue declines in the segment. Meanwhile, the proposed $111 billion merger with Paramount Skydance faces escalating financial risks due to regulatory delays. A federal judge in California recently set a March 2, 2027 trial date for the antitrust challenge led by 12 states, as reported by The Wrap in August 2026. This timeline triggers a 'ticking fee' provision in the merger agreement. Starting October 1, 2026, Paramount must pay WBD shareholders approximately $7 million for every day the deal remains open. These payments could exceed $1 billion by the time the trial begins, adding further financial complexity to a deal already under heavy scrutiny by both U.S. regulators and a coalition of state attorneys general. If the regulatory path remains blocked, Warner Bros. Discovery breakup scenarios are increasingly being discussed by analysts. The Paramount WBD merger delay continues to complicate long-term platform strategy.
