Sony Networked Live production updates target 80% energy reduction at IBC

The introduction of an 80% power-reduction feature for hardware nodes signals a shift toward operational sustainability in high-capacity IP fabrics. By prioritizing software-defined orchestration through VideoIPath and MOXELA, Sony and Nevion are positioning their stack to handle hybrid workflows that bridge the gap between legacy on-premises hardware and elastic cloud environments. This move reinforces the industry's push for open standards, as evidenced by the AMWA BCP-008 and MXL interoperability demonstrations with Cisco and AWS. Watch for how these power-saving metrics translate to real-world utility costs for Tier-1 broadcasters during the 2026-2027 production cycle.

Nevion has been expanding its orchestration and media-processing footprint across live production environments throughout 2025 and 2026. In February 2025, Nevion announced that its Virtuoso platform had been selected by EBU member broadcasters for IP-based contribution and distribution workflows, reinforcing the company's position within European public-service media infrastructure. The EBU's involvement is particularly relevant because its member organizations operate some of the most complex multi-site live production environments in the world, and their adoption of Nevion's IP fabric signals confidence in the platform's ability to handle mission-critical broadcast operations at scale. Sony's acquisition of Nevion in 2020 has since deepened integration between the two companies' product lines, with the Networked Live ecosystem serving as the unified brand for their combined IP media offering.

On the business and standards side, the AMWA (Advanced Media Workflow Association) has been advancing specifications that directly underpin the Sony-Nevion stack. AMWA published BCP-008, a specification for media node power management in IP media networks, in early 2026, providing a standardized framework for the kind of energy-saving features Sony and Nevion are demonstrating at IBC 2026. This specification gives broadcasters a vendor-neutral way to implement power-down and wake-on-demand capabilities across heterogeneous IP media environments, which is critical as sustainable AI in marketing frameworks and corporate ESG targets increasingly influence procurement decisions. Meanwhile, Sony announced in May 2026 that its M2L-X IP Live Production System had been deployed by a major Asia-Pacific broadcaster for 4K live sports coverage, demonstrating that the broader Sony IP production ecosystem continues to gain traction beyond the European market where Nevion has historically been strongest.

From a technical standpoint, the MOXELA media processing platform represents Nevion's latest effort to consolidate signal processing functions that previously required dedicated hardware appliances. Nevion detailed MOXELA's architecture at the 2025 NAB Show, highlighting its ability to handle JPEG XS encoding, decoding, and multiplexing on COTS hardware with sub-millisecond latency, a performance profile that positions it as a direct competitor to traditional SDI-based processing chains. The platform's software-defined approach aligns with the broader industry trend toward disaggregated media functions, where broadcasters can scale processing capacity independently of physical hardware refresh cycles. Cisco's involvement as an interoperability partner at IBC 2026 reflects the networking layer's growing importance in IP media, as , targeting the same Tier-1 broadcaster segment that Sony and Nevion are pursuing with their Networked Live offering.
