Sky Sports UK has updated its US Open production workflow by migrating to a hybrid SDI/NDI infrastructure and replacing RF cameras with LiveU bonded cellular units. The broadcaster also implemented a new discrete audio transport scheme and integrated Appear encoders into its REMI production chain for HDR content delivery to London.
The transition to a hybrid SDI/NDI architecture at a major event like the US Open demonstrates the increasing maturity of IP-based workflows in high-stakes remote production. By swapping expensive RF kits for LiveU bonded cellular, Sky Sports UK is validating cellular transport as a reliable, cost-effective alternative for roaming coverage in crowded environments. This move toward discrete audio and NDI monitoring reflects a broader industry trend where broadcasters prioritize modularity and smaller hardware footprints, such as the Appear encoders, to manage complex HDR feeds. Watch for whether Sky Sports expands this NDI-heavy REMI model to its upcoming domestic football or cricket coverage to further reduce on-site overhead.
LiveU has continued to expand its footprint in live sports production beyond the US Open. In August 2026, LiveU announced a multi-year agreement with the PGA Tour to provide bonded cellular uplink coverage across all tournament broadcasts, replacing traditional satellite trucks for roaming course coverage. The deal mirrors the same cost-reduction logic Sky Sports UK applied at Fountain Plaza, where bonded cellular units replaced RF cameras for roaming shots. LiveU also reported that its LU800 encoder was deployed at more than 40 major sporting events during the first half of 2026, including the Tour de France and Wimbledon, reinforcing its position as a default transport layer for broadcasters moving away from dedicated RF infrastructure.
Appear has similarly been building its presence in remote production chains for premium sports content. In May 2026, Appear confirmed that its XC5000 encoder platform had been selected by BT Sport (now TNT Sports) for HDR contribution links from Premier League stadiums to its London broadcast centre, a deployment that parallels Sky Sports UK's use of Appear encoders for HDR feeds from New York to London. The company also announced a partnership with Net Insight to integrate Nimbra-based transport for low-latency contribution over managed IP networks, targeting broadcasters that need deterministic latency for REMI workflows. Net Insight's Nimbra platform, which Sky Sports UK also uses in its US Open contribution chain, has been deployed by more than 200 broadcasters globally for managed media transport.
The broader shift toward hybrid SDI/NDI architectures in live sports is gaining measurable traction. Ross Video, whose Ultrix FR5 router is central to Sky Sports UK's Fountain Plaza setup, reported in its Q2 2026 earnings call that demand for hybrid SDI/IP routing had grown 35% year over year, driven primarily by sports and live event production. Meanwhile, Riedel's MediorNet and Bolero systems, used for intercom and signal distribution at the US Open, were deployed across 14 venues at the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, demonstrating the scalability of IP-based intercom and signal routing in multi-site remote production. Hawk-Eye Innovations, which provides ball-tracking data at the US Open, expanded its optical tracking system to cover all 17 courts at the 2026 tournament, up from 12 courts in 2025, adding further data feeds that must be transported back to broadcast centres alongside traditional video and audio.
