Samsung T9 microSD launch targets 8K action camera production workflows

The shift to 8K60 and high-bitrate 4K240 capture in action cameras like the GoPro MISSION 1 PRO places unprecedented demands on removable storage stability. While the 200MB/s read speed significantly reduces offload times for production teams, the lack of published sustained write data creates a critical verification gap for high-bitrate 240Mbps recording. As streaming platforms increasingly demand high-fidelity source files for multi-platform delivery, the reliability of the storage medium becomes a primary bottleneck in the capture pipeline. Watch for upcoming independent benchmark tests to confirm if the T9 maintains the consistent 30MB/s write performance required for 8K Open Gate modes.

Samsung's storage division has been aggressively targeting the action camera and drone capture market with its microSD lineup. The T9 series arrives as GoPro's MISSION 1 PRO camera supports 8K60 recording at bitrates exceeding 200Mbps, pushing microSD cards to their practical write-speed limits. Samsung previously positioned the PRO Plus and EVO Plus lines for similar workloads, but the T9 branding signals a dedicated professional tier. The company's earlier T7 microSD cards, which offered read speeds up to 160MB/s, were widely adopted by drone operators and action camera users who needed faster offload times without sacrificing capacity.

The microSD market for high-bitrate video capture has become a competitive battleground among storage manufacturers. SanDisk announced its Extreme PRO microSDXC cards with read speeds up to 200MB/s and write speeds rated at 140MB/s in early 2026, directly competing with Samsung's T9 positioning. The SD Association's A2 and V30 speed class certifications remain the baseline requirements for 4K and 8K video recording, though manufacturers increasingly market beyond those minimums. GoPro itself has published recommended microSD card lists for the HERO13 Black and MISSION 1 PRO, specifying UHS-I U3 and V30 as minimum requirements while noting that sustained write performance varies significantly between card models under continuous recording loads.

Independent benchmark testing of high-speed microSD cards has revealed meaningful gaps between marketed read speeds and sustained write performance under real recording conditions. RED Connect workflow testing of UHS-I microSD cards in 2025 found that sustained write speeds during continuous 4K video recording dropped 30 to 50 percent below peak specifications for several popular models, a finding that underscores why Samsung's decision to withhold sustained write data for the T9 series matters for professional users. The GoPro MISSION 1 PRO's 8K Open Gate mode at 240Mbps requires a minimum sustained write speed of approximately 30MB/s, and any card that cannot maintain that threshold will trigger recording stops or frame drops. Samsung has not yet confirmed whether the T9 series will undergo independent certification through bodies like the SD Association's Video Speed Class program beyond the V30 baseline.
