RTL+ reaches profitability as streaming adds €100M to operating profit

RTL Group's streaming profitability signals that European broadcasters are successfully transitioning from heavy investment cycles to sustainable earnings through consolidation and technical efficiency. By migrating to the Bedrock platform, RTL has established a scalable infrastructure that amortizes technology costs across multiple European markets, a model recently echoed by Peacock streaming profitability reaching profitability. The successful integration of Sky Deutschland creates a top-three streaming player in the DACH region, providing the necessary scale to compete with global platforms. Watch for whether RTL can reach its 9 million subscriber target by year-end while maintaining digital ad growth to counteract linear declines.

The completion of the Sky Deutschland acquisition on June 1, 2026, marks a major shift in the European media landscape. Per Reuters in August 2026, the deal added roughly €61 million to RTL Group’s adjusted EBITA in its first month of consolidation, though the company expects the unit to be broadly break-even for the full year as integration costs are absorbed. This move brings together two of the largest media brands in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, resulting in a combined base of approximately 12.4 million subscriptions across RTL+ and Sky’s WOW service. According to Bertelsmann reporting from April 2026, the merger is projected to generate roughly €250 million in annual run-rate synergies within three years.

Technologically, the migration of RTL+ to the Bedrock platform in April 2026 has been central to the group's efficiency drive. Bedrock, a joint venture between RTL Group and M6, now powers streaming services across France, Hungary, and the Netherlands. According to Investing.com in August 2026, RTL Deutschland’s broader restructuring includes cutting approximately 600 positions, a move expected to generate mid-double-digit million-euro savings annually. These internal efficiencies are being paired with aggressive external distribution, such as the January 2026 partnership that integrated M6+ into Amazon Prime Video in France at no extra cost to Prime members.

RTL’s pivot toward bundling and ad-sales partnerships reflects a broader industry trend toward aggregation. In early 2026, the company launched a discounted bundle of RTL+ and HBO Max in Germany and Austria, while its Ad Alliance unit began selling advertising for HBO Max. These strategic alliances, alongside strong digital engagement from events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underscore RTL’s effort to maintain market share as global streamers shift focus from subscriber growth to operational yield to diversified revenue streams including advertising and third-party distribution.
