Qvest is set to demonstrate a multi-vendor Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) at IBC2026, showcasing an interoperable, software-defined production environment. The implementation utilizes EBU architecture and the Linux Foundation MXL project, integrating technologies from partners including Intel, Matrox Video, and Skyline Communications.

Add as preferred sourceThis demonstration signals a shift from theoretical software-defined architectures to practical, multi-vendor implementations that reduce capital expenditure by eliminating dedicated hardware for single workflows. By utilizing the EBU’s DMF architecture and the Linux Foundation MXL project, Qvest is providing a blueprint for broadcasters to scale production capabilities without being tethered to a single proprietary ecosystem. This move pressures traditional hardware vendors to adopt open standards or risk exclusion from modern, flexible infrastructure models. Watch for the first live customer deployments of this functional DMF implementation following the IBC validation phase to gauge real-world performance gains in high-pressure broadcast environments.
The European Broadcasting Union has been advancing its Dynamic Media Facility architecture as a reference model for software-defined broadcast operations. In parallel, the Linux Foundation's MXL project, which provides a media exchange layer for interoperable production workflows, has gained traction among system integrators seeking to decouple broadcast functions from proprietary hardware. Qvest's IBC2026 demonstration represents one of the largest public validations of this combined architecture, bringing together more than a dozen technology partners under a single interoperable framework. The EBU's broader push toward open, IP-based production environments aligns with its earlier work on the EBU Tech 3356 specification for media transport, which has informed several commercial deployments across European public broadcasters.
On the competitive landscape, system integrators and technology vendors are racing to establish themselves as the orchestration layer for software-defined media facilities. Nokia has been assembling its Autonomous Network Fabric as a control plane for telco operations, integrating agentic AI with cloud-native architecture across AWS and Databricks partnerships announced at DTW Ignite in June 2026, a model that mirrors the orchestration ambitions Qvest is pursuing in the media domain. Skyline Communications, one of Qvest's DMF partners, provides its DataMiner xOps platform for cross-domain monitoring and automation, positioning it as the operational backbone for multi-vendor environments. The convergence of agentic AI frameworks across both telecom and media infrastructure suggests that interoperability standards will become a decisive differentiator for vendors competing in the software-defined facility space.
Technical validation of open media exchange layers remains a critical hurdle for adoption. Ericsson launched its AI in RAN commercial software subscription on June 11, 2026, claiming up to 20% higher downlink throughput and up to 10% better spectral efficiency across more than 15 live deployments, demonstrating that software-defined architectures can deliver measurable performance gains when deployed at scale on existing hardware. For the broadcast sector, the analogous benchmark will be whether Lawo Dynamic Media Facility workflows can match or exceed the latency and reliability of dedicated hardware pipelines under live production conditions. Intel's participation in the Qvest showcase, providing commodity compute for media processing, signals that general-purpose silicon is approaching the performance thresholds previously reserved for purpose-built broadcast hardware, a trend that could accelerate the shift toward software-defined production across mid-tier broadcasters.
