DVB-I platform deployments from Germany and New Zealand debut at IBC2026

The simultaneous demonstration of German and New Zealand platforms indicates that DVB-I is moving from theoretical specification to national-scale implementation. By utilizing open standards like DVB-NIP and Media over QUIC, these deployments provide a blueprint for broadcasters to maintain service discovery and linear experiences within an IP-centric ecosystem. This shift allows hardware manufacturers like Hisense and Vestel to support standardized internet-based delivery without relying on proprietary app environments. As these services move toward public launch, the industry should monitor how these platforms handle addressable advertising and content provenance to ensure parity with traditional broadcast capabilities.

The DVB Project has been steadily building momentum for DVB-I as the successor framework for internet-delivered linear television. In Germany, the national DVB-I platform builds on the country's existing DVB-T2 infrastructure and HbbTV ecosystem. Germany's public broadcasters ARD and ZDF confirmed in early 2026 that they would integrate DVB-I service discovery into their existing HbbTV portals, signaling that the transition is being coordinated at the national broadcaster level rather than left to individual device manufacturers. New Zealand's Freeview has taken a parallel path, positioning DVB-I as the backbone for its next-generation free-to-air platform. Freeview New Zealand announced in mid-2026 that its DVB-I-based service would support both broadband-only and hybrid broadcast-broadband reception modes, a design choice that mirrors the dual-mode approach specified in the DVB-I standard and allows the platform to serve households without reliable terrestrial coverage.

On the regulatory and standards side, DVB-I sits within a broader push to formalize IP delivery specifications. The DVB Project finalized the DVB-NIP (Native IP) specification in late 2025, which defines how linear services are delivered over managed and unmanaged IP networks using standard internet protocols. The DVB Steering Board approved DVB-NIP Phase 2 in November 2025, adding support for Media over QUIC transport and updated content protection profiles, giving manufacturers a concrete implementation target for the IBC2026 demonstrations. The Media over QUIC working group within the IETF has been collaborating with DVB to ensure that the QUIC-based transport layer aligns with broader internet standards, reducing the risk of fragmentation between broadcast-originated and web-native delivery. HbbTV, which already serves as the application layer for hybrid TV in Germany and several other European markets, provides the interactive overlay that sits atop DVB-I service discovery, creating a unified user experience across broadcast and broadband content.

Hardware readiness is a critical enabler for these national rollouts. Hisense and Vestel, the two manufacturers featured in the IBC2026 demonstrations, represent a significant share of the European and Asia-Pacific TV market. Vestel confirmed in June 2026 that its 2027 TV chipset lineup would include native DVB-I client support alongside DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 tuners, meaning that DVB-I reception will be available in mid-range sets without requiring external hardware. Hisense has taken a similar approach for its European SKUs. Independent testing has also begun to validate the technical performance of DVB-I stacks. , a figure that approaches the responsiveness viewers expect from traditional broadcast tuning and addresses one of the longstanding criticisms of IP-delivered linear TV.
