Netflix has acquired the AI startup InterPositive, founded by Ben Affleck, to integrate proprietary tools for post-production tasks like relighting and continuity. Industry experts note the move signifies a strategic internal investment by the streamer to optimize production workflows rather than a broad play in the virtual production market.
The acquisition underscores a shift from broad generative AI experiments to specialized, production-aware tools that fit into established professional pipelines. By owning the technology, Netflix can reduce costly reshoots and streamline editing across its massive content slate without relying on third-party software vendors. This move effectively brings high-end VFX capabilities in-house, setting a precedent for other major studios to acquire niche AI startups to secure a competitive advantage in production speed and cost. Watch for whether Netflix integrates these tools with its existing Eyeline tech unit to create a unified AI-driven post-production ecosystem.
The acquisition of InterPositive follows a broader trend of major studios securing proprietary AI capabilities to mitigate rising production costs. In March 2026, regulatory filings revealed Netflix paid approximately $587 million in cash for the deal, marking one of its most significant acquisitions since the $700 million purchase of the Roald Dahl Story Company. Per Bloomberg, the total deal value could climb to $600 million based on performance targets. This internal investment aligns with Netflix's disclosure in July 2026 that it has already employed generative AI workflows in approximately 300 titles to create complex sequences, such as historical battle scenes and enhanced crowds, at significantly reduced costs.
While Netflix positions these tools as human-centric assistants, the broader industry remains divided. According to a Los Angeles Times analysis in August 2026, over 10% of new Hollywood job postings are now AI-related as companies like Amazon MGM and Disney build internal AI task forces. Simultaneously, competitors are forming high-profile partnerships with AI-native firms; for instance, Lionsgate granted Runway access to its 20,000-title library to train models for production savings. Despite the push for efficiency, the creative community's reception is mixed. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos noted that AI-assisted VFX sequences, such as those in the series El Eternauta, were completed ten times faster than traditional methods, yet industry labor concerns persist regarding the long-term impact on post-production roles.
