NDI is updating its protocol with versions 6.2 and 6.3, introducing enhanced APIs and monitoring capabilities to support cloud-native workflows for Tier 1 broadcasters. The release aims to reduce reliance on dedicated hardware and PTP infrastructure by leveraging CPU-based codec processing and unicast-friendly discovery.
The shift toward NDI 6.3 signals a strategic pivot to challenge SMPTE ST 2110 in high-end broadcast environments by lowering the barrier to entry. By eliminating mandatory PTP timing infrastructure and specialized hardware, NDI reduces the cost per output for multi-platform distribution. This positions software-defined workflows as a viable alternative for Tier 1 networks seeking to scale digital feeds and language versions without doubling their capital expenditure. Competitively, it forces legacy control system manufacturers to choose between integrating NDI’s new APIs or ceding the software-native market to flexible rivals. Watch for the adoption rate of NDI 6.3 in major sports broadcast trucks over the next 12 months.
The transition to IP-based production has reached a critical phase in 2026. Per Promwad (January 2026), the debate has shifted from whether to migrate to which flavor of IP to adopt, with SMPTE ST 2110 remaining the choice for uncompressed, deterministic timing despite its high infrastructure costs. NDI’s latest updates aim to capture the middle ground between high-end precision and the operational flexibility required for remote and hybrid production. At NAB 2026, Vizrt showcased its TriCaster Vizion platform, which supports up to 44 live inputs and integrates with NDI and traditional SDI setups, emphasizing a hybrid approach to infrastructure (per VidOvation, June 2026).
Market adoption of NDI is already visible at the enterprise level. Major organizations like the NHL and BBC have reportedly integrated NDI 6 into their cloud-based production stacks to reduce setup times for remote control rooms to under one month (per NDI.video, September 2025). Furthermore, the release of NDI 6.3 in early 2026 added support for Agilex 7 FPGA chipsets, bridging the gap between software flexibility and high-performance hardware requirements (per AVNetwork, January 2026). As broadcasters like CNBC and Sky utilize these tools, the industry is increasingly favoring protocols that offer bidirectionality and centralized management similar to traditional broadcast matrices but at a significantly lower total cost of ownership.
