Lawo to showcase dynamic resource allocation and Grass Valley interoperability at IBC2026

Broadcasters are moving away from fixed, room-based hardware stacks toward virtualized resource pools that shift according to production needs. By integrating with Grass Valley’s AMPP and adhering to EBU’s Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) framework, Lawo is standardizing how disparate software platforms communicate, reducing the custom integration burden for large-scale operations. This move signals a critical shift in the B2B tech stack from proprietary hardware lockdowns to open, containerized microservices. Watch for the official release of mc² version 12.6, which will introduce dynamic surface-to-system assignment to further decouple physical control from underlying processing.

The transition toward dynamic media facilities is gaining momentum through industry-wide collaboration. Per the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in July 2025, the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) was introduced as a key enabler for the DMF vision, providing a standardized code package for data exchange between virtualized media functions. This initiative, developed in conjunction with the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), aims to supplant rigid hardware with software containers that can be instantiated on-demand across local servers or public cloud environments. Industry leaders at a July 2026 panel hosted by the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) emphasized that DMF and MXL are intended to complement, rather than replace, SMPTE ST 2110. While ST 2110 handles the transport of broadcast-quality signals, the DMF framework organizes the orchestration layers necessary for multi-vendor interoperability within computing clusters. This structural shift addresses the growing need to share expensive processing resources across multiple productions to improve capital efficiency. Competitive activity in this space has also accelerated. Per TV Tech in July 2024, Grass Valley and Lawo began their formal collaboration to ensure their respective HOME and AMPP platforms could share resource visibility and routing control. Simultaneously, regional players like India’s IBC 24 news network have already begun large-scale deployments of software-defined solutions, choosing Grass Valley’s AMPP for its end-to-end cloud-native capabilities, as reported in September 2024. These deployments prove that the microservices-based approach promoted by Lawo is no longer theoretical but is becoming the operational standard for high-bandwidth news and sports broadcasting.
