GlobalM has expanded its software-defined media platform with the introduction of GMX1 for on-premises deployments and GMDC for third-party device management. These additions aim to provide a unified operational layer for managing live IP workflows across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises infrastructure.
The launch addresses the growing need for 'cloud-consistent' operations where the management interface remains the same regardless of the physical compute location. For broadcasters, this reduces the technical debt associated with maintaining siloed legacy on-prem systems alongside modern cloud environments. Strategically, this allows operators to shift away from static hardware gateways toward an elastic gateway architecture that can scale dynamically during peak live events. Watch for GlobalM to demonstrate these capabilities at IBC 2026, specifically focusing on how GMDC integrates with high-density third-party hardware from established vendors.
The transition toward software-defined media infrastructure occurs as hybrid cloud becomes the dominant architectural choice for the streaming industry. Per the Flexera 2026 State of the Cloud Report, 73% of organizations have adopted hybrid models to balance the scalability of public clouds with the cost predictability of on-premises hardware. This shift is particularly acute in live sports and news, where the Federal Communications Commission noted rising operational costs for traditional cable systems—climbing to an average of $108 per month by 2025—which has pushed broadcasters to seek more efficient IP-based distribution methods to maintain margins.
Market data from Global Market Insights in May 2026 valued the software-defined networking (SDN) market at $42.1 billion, with a projected CAGR of 19.3% through 2035. This growth is largely driven by the adoption of SD-WAN and centralized orchestration layers that decouple transport from routing intelligence. Industry analysts at Unified Streaming highlighted in February 2026 that 'hybrid streaming architectures' are now a primary trend for 2026, as platforms prioritize cost control and efficiency over the previous decade's 'cloud-at-any-cost' mentality.
GlobalM’s expansion also follows its previous collaboration with Globecast and World Curling in late 2025 to deliver live sports distribution via IP. This reflects a broader industry move toward utilizing software-defined video networks (SDVN) over traditional satellite for contribution. While satellite remains a core baseline for resilience, NAB 2026 reporting from April indicate that major operators are increasingly leveraging distributed video gateways to manage the technical complexity of multi-region, 5G-enabled edge computing and low-latency delivery.
