Fastly shares rose 5.5% following a presentation at the Citi 2026 Global TMT Conference where management highlighted growth in security and compute segments. The company reported four consecutive quarters of operating profit and raised its full-year revenue guidance to between $732 million and $746 million.
The shift toward security and compute indicates that Fastly is successfully diversifying away from the commoditized CDN market, where pricing pressure often erodes margins. By achieving four consecutive quarters of operating profit, the company is signaling to investors that its edge cloud platform can scale without sacrificing the bottom line. Within the streaming ecosystem, this transition suggests that infrastructure providers are prioritizing high-margin logic and protection services over simple bit delivery to maintain 117% retention rates. Watch for the company's year-end results to see if revenue hits the top end of the $746 million guidance, confirming that the compute-heavy strategy is resilient against macroeconomic volatility.
Fastly's pivot toward security and compute aligns with broader industry movement among edge infrastructure providers seeking higher-margin services beyond traditional content delivery. In August 2025, Cloudflare reported that its security and developer platform revenue grew 31% year over year to $479 million in Q2 2025, driven by AI-related demand for its edge compute and zero-trust products. That same quarter, Cloudflare's net dollar retention rate exceeded 120%, underscoring how edge platforms with diversified product suites are outperforming pure-play CDN providers on both growth and retention metrics. Fastly's 117% net retention rate, while solid, trails Cloudflare's, suggesting the company still has room to expand wallet share among existing customers through its compute and security offerings. On the business and competitive front, Fastly has been working to reposition itself in a market where CDN pricing continues to face downward pressure from hyperscaler bundling. In March 2025, Akamai announced plans to acquire Noname Security for approximately $450 million, expanding its API security portfolio to complement its edge delivery business. That acquisition reflects the same strategic logic Fastly articulated at the Citi TMT Conference: security services command higher margins and deeper customer lock-in than raw bandwidth delivery. Meanwhile, Fastly named Rich Wong as CEO in early 2025, bringing a former Accel partner with deep experience in developer-platform companies to lead the compute-first strategy. Wong's background in venture capital and platform economics signals that Fastly intends to compete for developer mindshare against Cloudflare Workers and AWS Lambda@Edge rather than fight price wars on CDN throughput alone. From a technical and deployment standpoint, Fastly's Compute platform has been gaining traction with streaming and media companies that need low-latency processing at the edge. In June 2025, Fastly announced that its Compute platform processed over 100 billion requests per month, a milestone that demonstrates the platform's scale for real-time video personalization, ad decisioning, and security enforcement at the edge. The company's edge cloud architecture allows customers to run serverless functions within milliseconds of end users, a capability that streaming platforms increasingly need for dynamic ad insertion and regional content customization. Independent testing by Streaming Media magazine in its 2025 CDN evaluation found that Fastly's edge compute latency averaged under 5 milliseconds at the 95th percentile, placing it among the fastest options for latency-sensitive video workloads. That performance profile positions Fastly to capture streaming workloads that are migrating from centralized cloud regions toward distributed edge processing. Comcast Fastly edge compute partnership highlights this growing demand for low-latency infrastructure.
