Former Twitter employee Evan Henshaw-Plath has launched Divine, a decentralized short-form video app built on the Nostr protocol. The platform features a six-second loop format, restores two million original Vine videos, and implements ProofMode verification to restrict AI-generated content.
The Divine video app launch represents a strategic pivot toward decentralized infrastructure in the short-form video market, challenging the walled-garden models of TikTok and Instagram. By utilizing the Nostr protocol, the platform shifts control from a central corporation to the users, potentially solving long-standing issues regarding data portability and platform lock-in. Furthermore, its aggressive stance against AI-generated content via ProofMode addresses growing industry concerns over deepfakes and synthetic media saturation. This move tests whether a niche, high-authenticity environment can scale without the algorithmic hooks common in mainstream social media. Watch for Divine's ability to maintain server stability and user retention as it attempts to convert nostalgia for the six-second format into a sustainable decentralized ecosystem.
The Nostr protocol has attracted a growing ecosystem of developers building censorship-resistant social applications, with Divine representing the most prominent attempt to apply it to short-form video. Jack Dorsey, who co-founded Twitter and later backed Bluesky, publicly endorsed Nostr as a protocol layer in early 2023, calling it a simple and open standard that could underpin decentralized social networking. That endorsement brought significant developer attention to the protocol, which uses public-key cryptography to let users own their identities and data across any compatible client. Divine's decision to build on Nostr rather than a proprietary stack places it within this broader movement of protocol-first social applications that prioritize portability over platform lock-in.
On the business side, Divine's revival of the Vine archive raises questions about content ownership and licensing in decentralized environments. The Internet Archive, which has preserved millions of Vine videos since the platform shut down in 2017, reported in 2024 that its Wayback Machine held over 1.5 million archived Vine clips accessible to the public. Divine's restoration of approximately 2.5 million original Vines, including work from creators like Jake Paul and Lele Pons, tests whether a decentralized platform can legally host user-generated content originally created under a now-defunct centralized service's terms. The ProofMode verification system, which requires cryptographic proof that video was captured on a physical device, positions Divine as an early mover in content authenticity at a time when platforms face mounting pressure to label synthetic media.
Technically, Divine's six-second loop format and decentralized architecture present distinct infrastructure challenges compared to centralized short-form platforms. The Nostr protocol relies on independent relays to store and distribute content, meaning Divine's video delivery depends on a distributed network of relay operators rather than a single CDN. This architecture trades the low-latency guarantees of centralized CDNs for resilience against single points of failure. The ProofMode implementation, which verifies that video files contain unbroken cryptographic chains from camera capture to upload, represents one of the first production deployments of device-level attestation for social video, a technique that larger platforms have discussed but not yet widely implemented at scale.
