Cobalt Digital IPMX support expands with JPEG XS TDC integration

The addition of JPEG XS TDC support across Cobalt’s portfolio addresses a critical friction point in IP migration: the complexity of multi-vendor interoperability. By embedding these standards into existing openGear and software-defined platforms, Cobalt allows engineers to maintain legacy SDI operations while scaling IP capacity without a complete hardware overhaul. This move reinforces the IPMX standard's position as a viable bridge between professional broadcast and ProAV environments. As the industry moves toward software-defined infrastructure, watch for adoption rates of the UltraBlue MV-SW to signal how quickly tier-one broadcasters are willing to abandon dedicated hardware multiviewers for virtualized alternatives.

The IPMX ecosystem has been building momentum through 2026 as vendors race to certify products ahead of major trade shows. Cobalt Digital's IPMX-certified product line now spans encoders, decoders, and multiviewers across its SAPPHIRE, INDIGO, and PACIFIC platforms, positioning the company as one of the broader hardware vendors committed to the standard. The Video Services Forum has been coordinating interoperability testing events to validate multi-vendor IPMX stacks, and Cobalt's expansion into JPEG XS TDC support places it among a growing group of manufacturers targeting sub-frame latency for live production workflows.

On the business and standards side, IPMX continues to gain institutional backing from the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) and the Video Services Forum, which jointly maintain the specification stack that layers NMOS discovery, JPEG XS transport, and SMPTE ST 2110 signaling into a unified framework. Nokia and Google Cloud announced at DTW IGNITE 2026 a partnership deploying six specialized AI agents for telecom network operations, illustrating how adjacent IP infrastructure vendors are investing in automation layers that could eventually intersect with broadcast IP transport management. For Cobalt Digital, the strategic bet is that IPMX certification reduces integration friction enough to win budget from broadcasters who might otherwise default to proprietary IP solutions from larger competitors like Grass Valley or Sony.

Technical benchmarks for JPEG XS TDC remain limited in public reporting, but the codec's design targets visually lossless compression at ratios between 2:1 and 10:1 with latency under one millisecond, making it suitable for contribution and distribution links where frame-accurate switching is required. Ericsson launched its AI in RAN commercial software subscription on June 11, 2026, claiming up to 20% higher downlink throughput across more than 15 live deployments, a reminder that IP-based transport standards are being stress-tested across multiple verticals simultaneously. Cobalt's decision to pair JPEG XS TDC with Dante audio over fiber I/O suggests the company is targeting facilities that need synchronized audio-video transport without dedicating separate network paths, a common pain point in hybrid SDI/IP plant designs that universal IP-based production transition and IBC2026 attendees will be evaluating firsthand.
