Castlabs unifies IPTV and OTT security to retire legacy hardware systems

Castlabs unifies IPTV and OTT security to retire legacy hardware systems
castlabs

Castlabs has updated its cloud-based DRMtoday service to support IPTV multicast delivery using CENC, Widevine, and PlayReady. This software-defined approach aims to enable PayTV operators to unify security for both multicast and OTT workflows, replacing traditional hardware-dependent conditional access systems.

Key Takeaways

  • DRMtoday now secures RTP/UDP multicast channels using CENC, Widevine L1, and PlayReady SL3000
  • Software-first integration replaces hardware headends and ECMGs, avoiding CAPEX-heavy refresh cycles
  • Unified dashboard and entitlement flows cover Android TV, Linux/RDK set-top boxes, smart TVs, and mobile
  • The application-layer player library requires no OEM firmware updates for existing STB brownfield fleets

Why It Matters

This shift represents a significant move toward technical convergence in the PayTV market. By bridging the gap between legacy multicast and modern unicast security, operators can consolidate vendors and reduce the high operational costs associated with smart cards and proprietary middleware. This unification simplifies the transition to full-IP delivery, as the underlying DRM infrastructure remains identical regardless of the delivery method. For the broader ecosystem, it signals the declining necessity of traditional CAS hardware in favor of studio-trusted, software-driven DRM that scales across fragmented device environments. Watch for a reduction in per-box royalty fees as operators swap legacy CAS licenses for unified cloud DRM contracts.

Additional Context

The global IPTV market remains a massive segment of the video industry, projected to exceed $110 billion by 2027 with over 300 million households worldwide, per CrocOTT in April 2026. While unicast OTT streaming is growing rapidly at a 17.4% CAGR, multicast delivery still accounted for approximately 64.5% of IPTV revenue in 2025 due to its superior bandwidth efficiency for live linear broadcasting, according to Mordor Intelligence. This creates a persistent need for security solutions that can handle both legacy managed network requirements and modern streaming protocols.

Industry trends show an accelerating abandonment of legacy middleware and hardware-locked conditional access systems (CAS). Operators are increasingly moving toward cloud-native, software-defined architectures to gain flexibility and reduce total cost of ownership. For instance, BT Group recently trialed Multicast-Assisted Unicast Delivery (MAUD) in partnership with Broadpeak to optimize live delivery, per BT in March 2024. These shifts allow operators to treat infrastructure as an operating expense (OPEX) rather than capital expenditure (CAPEX).

Standardization efforts also support this transition. Recent ITU-T recommendations, such as H.725 in June 2024, have focused on virtualized IPTV terminal device architectures to reduce dependence on proprietary set-top box hardware. By adopting unified security models like Castlabs' DRMtoday, operators can better compete with pure-play OTT services while leveraging their existing managed network infrastructure to deliver premium 4K and UHD content that requires hardware-level protection (TEE).
