This NewscastStudio roundtable features various broadcast technology vendors discussing the industry's shift toward multi-vendor, software-defined ecosystems and phased infrastructure modernization. Experts emphasize the importance of open standards like NMOS, the operational challenges of managing complex technical handoffs, and the transition toward continuous, containerized software development.
The shift to phased modernization signals the end of the traditional five-to-seven-year capital expenditure cycle for broadcast facilities. By adopting software-defined architectures and open standards, broadcasters can theoretically avoid vendor lock-in and adjust capacity for peak demand without buying hardware for worst-case scenarios. However, this federated approach places a premium on internal engineering talent capable of managing complex API integrations and real-time observability across disparate vendors. As the industry moves toward cloud-native microservices, the competitive edge will shift from those with the newest hardware to those with the most agile software supply chains. Watch for a rise in 'agentic engineering' solutions designed to unify these fragmented multi-vendor environments under a single orchestration layer.
The trend toward phased, IP-driven modernization is reflected in recent industry activity focused on standardizing the transition from Serial Digital Interface (SDI) to networked environments. Per TV Technology (March 2024), broadcast engineers are increasingly integrating Dante and AES67 for audio alongside SMPTE ST 2110 for video to create unified networked infrastructures. This hybrid approach is further validated by the emergence of the IPMX (Internet Protocol Media Experience) standard, which, according to TVBEurope (October 2025), is designed to simplify ST 2110 deployments for environments that require ease of setup without the rigid timing demands of PTP-based synchronization.
Economic pressures continue to dictate these technology choices. Per Lakewood Advisors (May 2025), linear broadcast networks have accelerated expense reductions, focusing capital spending strictly on technologies that either lower operational costs or directly enable new revenue streams like FAST channels. This has led to a surge in remote production (REMI) and cloud-connected workflows. Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported in July 2025 that cloud migration is picking up speed as boards demand AI readiness, which traditional on-premises data centers struggle to support due to rigid GPU and power constraints.
Major vendors are reporting record financial results by leaning into this software-centric shift. EVS Broadcast Equipment reported its fifth consecutive year of record revenue in February 2026, crediting its 'PLAYForward' strategy and the expansion of its software-defined T-Motion division. Meanwhile, Imagine Communications highlighted in January 2025 that 're-linearization'—using linear ROI models within streaming contexts—is driving media companies to adopt hybrid systems that combine on-premises reliability with cloud-based scalability.
