A consortium of major broadcasters and news organizations, including the AP, BBC, and NBCUniversal, is developing the Story Object Model (SOM) to standardize editorial context across newsroom and AI tools. The project aims to ensure that metadata like verification status and compliance sign-offs remain attached to content as it moves through multi-vendor production workflows.
The immediate implication of this standard is the elimination of manual handovers for editorial metadata, reducing the risk that AI tools fill context gaps with fabricated information. By formalizing knowledge that previously lived in informal messaging apps, the ecosystem gains a reliable way to track content provenance and verification status across fragmented production stacks. This shift toward decentralized intelligence allows broadcasters to maintain strict editorial control without being locked into a single vendor's ecosystem. Watch for the live multi-vendor demonstration at IBC2026 to see if the reference implementation can maintain metadata integrity across three different levels of engineering effort.
The push to standardize newsroom metadata is gaining momentum across the broadcast industry. In early 2025, the European Broadcasting Union published guidelines on AI governance for public service media, recommending that member organizations adopt structured metadata frameworks to maintain editorial accountability when deploying generative AI tools. The EBU's 68 members, including the BBC and other Story Object Model consortium participants, have been exploring how to preserve journalistic provenance as AI-assisted workflows proliferate. Meanwhile, Octopus Newsroom announced in March 2025 that its Octopus 13 release included expanded API integrations designed to support interoperability with third-party AI services, signaling that commercial newsroom vendors are already building toward the kind of open metadata exchange the SOM envisions.
On the business and standards side, the Story Object Model effort sits within a broader wave of industry collaboration around AI governance in media. The Partnership on AI released a framework in late 2024 for responsible AI deployment in newsrooms, which called for standardized provenance tracking and verification metadata as prerequisites for trustworthy AI-assisted journalism. Separately, the BBC announced in June 2025 a partnership with Google Cloud to develop AI tools for its news operations, a deal that explicitly included commitments to maintaining editorial metadata integrity across cloud-based production pipelines. These moves suggest that the SOM consortium is not operating in isolation but rather converging with commercial and policy efforts that all point toward the same architectural requirement: persistent, machine-readable editorial context.
From a technical perspective, adjacent standards bodies are tackling related problems in content provenance and verification. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) released version 2.1 of its technical specification in January 2025, adding support for AI-generated content labeling and editorial action tracking that complements the SOM's focus on newsroom workflow metadata. C2PA's members include Adobe, Microsoft, and the BBC, creating potential for alignment between cryptographic provenance at the file level and the SOM's editorial context layer. Additionally, Panasonic Connect KAIROS updates enhance live production and broadcast workflows, showcasing how metadata-rich production environments can feed automated highlight generation and compliance checking, use cases that the SVG AI Innovation Lab is now adapting for sports broadcasting.
The Story Object Model (SOM) is a new open framework developed by a consortium including the BBC, NBCUniversal, and Associated Press. It preserves editorial context and verification status as media moves between newsroom systems and AI tools, reducing the risk of AI-generated errors and eliminating manual metadata handovers.
The SOM is designed to preserve editorial context, verification status, and compliance sign-offs as media moves across multi-vendor production chains and AI tools.
Founding members include the Associated Press, BBC, NBCUniversal, and ITN, with additional technology support provided by AWS and Google Cloud.
Octopus Newsroom is scheduled to demonstrate the standard alongside its Octopus 13 system featuring agentic workflows at IBC2026.
The SOM helps broadcasters maintain strict editorial control and provenance tracking, aligning with industry-wide efforts to ensure trustworthy AI-assisted journalism and prevent the use of fabricated information.
