Sports broadcasters are increasingly moving away from single world feeds toward multi-version production models to support diverse distribution platforms. This shift relies on IP-based infrastructure, automation, and metadata-driven workflows to efficiently scale content for specific markets and audiences.
The move toward multi-version production allows rights holders to extract higher value from a single event by tailoring advertising and presentation to specific regional or platform-based audiences. By decoupling production from rigid geographical boundaries, broadcasters can test emerging digital formats without risking the integrity of the primary broadcast. This shift signals a broader industry move toward software-defined workflows where metadata is as critical as the video signal itself. Watch for how rights holders integrate real-time betting data and AI-driven personalization into these automated feeds to drive deeper fan engagement and new sponsorship tiers.
The shift toward multi-version sports production is accelerating across major rights holders and technology vendors. In early 2026, NTT Docomo and Samsung validated a 5G network optimization technique that nearly halved throughput degradation events, demonstrating that per-user prediction models can maintain stream quality for individual viewers during live events without additional spectrum or hardware. While that work targets mobile delivery rather than production-side versioning, it underscores the network-level demands that multi-feed sports workflows place on infrastructure as broadcasters push simultaneous customized streams to diverse audiences.
On the production technology side, Ericsson has been positioning its network and compute platforms as foundational layers for AI-driven media workflows. At MWC 2026, Ericsson's networks chief Per Narvinger described how AI models can extract 10 percent more capacity from existing spectrum, a capability directly relevant to broadcasters managing concurrent IP video feeds across multiple distribution endpoints. Narvinger, who was subsequently named Ericsson's next CEO effective October 2026, emphasized that AI-native RAN optimization is already delivering measurable results rather than remaining a future concept. The company also presented AI-geared RAN software enhancements for beamforming and coverage prediction, alongside new radios featuring custom Ericsson Silicon chips with neural accelerators, all of which support the low-latency, high-throughput requirements of live sports IP production.
The broader agentic AI trend is also reaching network operations that underpin live broadcast distribution. Ericsson published a detailed framework in July 2025 describing agentic AI as a pathway to autonomous network level 5, claiming an 80 percent reduction in time spent on analysis and decision-making for network operations teams. For sports broadcasters running multi-version feeds across IP infrastructure, autonomous network management reduces the operational overhead of maintaining quality of service across dozens of simultaneous output streams. Meanwhile, Cradlepoint integrated agentic AI into its NetCloud platform in 2025, becoming the first enterprise 5G vendor to do so, signaling that autonomous orchestration is moving from carrier-grade deployments into the enterprise and venue-level connectivity that supports remote and distributed sports production workflows.
