AST SpaceMobile has filed with the FCC for temporary direct-to-cell testing in the UK using Vodafone's 800MHz and 900MHz spectrum. The trial, authorized by Ofcom through September 2026, includes strict operational requirements such as mandatory beam deactivation in the event of terrestrial signal interference.
The UK filing signals a transition from theoretical direct-to-cell capability toward controlled infrastructure integration with major mobile network operators. For the streaming ecosystem, this represents the foundational plumbing for ubiquitous mobile broadband that bypasses traditional cellular dead zones. If successful, these trials validate the use of standard terrestrial spectrum for space-based delivery, potentially expanding the addressable market for high-bandwidth video services in remote regions. The critical metric to track next is the transition from these non-commercial trials to permanent commercial licensing under Ofcom’s broader Direct-to-Device regulatory framework.
The UK trial filing arrives as the direct-to-cell market reaches a commercial tipping point. Per KeepTrack.space reporting from July 2026, SpaceX has already deployed over 650 direct-to-cell satellites, enabling a 4G messaging service that is live in 22 countries. While Starlink’s current service primarily targets text and emergency alerts, AST SpaceMobile is positioning its BlueBird constellation as a high-bandwidth alternative. AST’s Block 1 satellites previously demonstrated peak download speeds of 98.9 Mbps to unmodified smartphones, and its next-generation BlueBirds—the latest of which launched in August 2026—feature phased arrays of approximately 2,400 square feet to support higher data capacities. Regulatory activity in the UK has accelerated to accommodate these hybrid networks. In December 2025, Ofcom finalized a new regulatory framework allowing mobile network operators to vary their existing licenses to include satellite-to-device services. This framework was designed to prevent interference with critical infrastructure, such as air traffic control radars operating in the 2.7–3.1 GHz range. While Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile are advancing these trials, they face direct competition from Virgin Media O2, which launched its 'O2 Satellite' service using SpaceX’s network in February 2026, according to coverage data from August 2026. These developments suggest a bifurcated market where operators must choose between the speed of SpaceX’s massive constellation and the potential broadband throughput of AST’s larger phased-array systems.
