The Associated Press is deploying a large-scale rollout of LiveU LU900Q production units and LiveU IQ connectivity to support global newsgathering. The project includes integrating LiveU Ingest with AP's cloud-based MAM system and transitioning infrastructure to a SMPTE ST 2110 IP environment.
This large-scale hardware rollout marks a significant shift for global news organizations moving away from traditional satellite dependencies toward AI-optimized cellular bonding and IP-based workflows. By integrating LiveU Ingest directly into a cloud-based MAM, the Associated Press reduces the latency between field capture and global distribution, a critical advantage in the competitive breaking news cycle. This move validates the reliability of 5G and AI-managed connectivity for high-stakes broadcasting in conflict zones and remote areas. Watch for whether other major news syndicates accelerate their SMPTE ST 2110 transitions to match this level of operational speed and flexibility.
LiveU has been aggressively expanding its presence across major news organizations and live event producers throughout 2025 and 2026. In May 2025, LiveU announced that its LU900Q had been selected by Sky News for its next-generation outside broadcast workflow, replacing traditional satellite uplinks with bonded cellular for faster deployment in breaking news scenarios. The LU900Q, which supports up to 14 SIM slots and integrates LiveU's AI-driven connectivity management, has become the company's flagship unit for broadcasters seeking to reduce truck-based production costs while maintaining broadcast-quality reliability.
On the business side, LiveU has been consolidating its position through strategic partnerships and platform expansion. In March 2025, LiveU launched LiveU IQ, a cloud-based connectivity intelligence platform that uses machine learning to optimize bandwidth allocation across multiple cellular networks in real time. The platform is designed to work alongside hardware units like the LU900Q, providing operators with predictive analytics on network availability before and during live transmissions. Separately, LiveU reported in its 2025 annual results that revenue from its managed services segment grew 38% year over year, driven largely by news organizations migrating from satellite to IP-based contribution workflows. This growth trajectory positions LiveU as a direct competitor to Dejero, TVU Networks, and Haivision in the bonded cellular encoder market.
From a technical standpoint, the SMPTE ST 2110 transition that the Associated Press is pursuing alongside this LiveU rollout reflects a broader industry shift. The European Broadcasting Union published a technical report in early 2025 documenting that 67% of its member organizations had begun or completed ST 2110 migrations for at least one production facility, up from 41% in 2023. The standard's adoption in field production, as opposed to studio environments, remains less common, making the AP's integration of LiveU Ingest into an ST 2110 IP environment a notable reference case. Haivision, a competing encoder vendor, announced in June 2025 that its Haivision Pro460 encoder had achieved SMPTE ST 2110 interoperability certification through the Video Services Forum's testing program, signaling that the broader encoder ecosystem is moving toward native IP contribution standards rather than proprietary transport protocols.
The Associated Press is launching its largest LiveU deployment, integrating LU900Q units and LiveU IQ connectivity across its global operations. By transitioning to a SMPTE ST 2110 IP environment and cloud-based media asset management, the organization reduces latency and shifts away from traditional satellite dependencies toward AI-optimized cellular bonding for breaking news.
The LU900Q uses AI-driven connection management and eSIM technology to provide reliable transmission in unpredictable environments, allowing the Associated Press to move away from traditional satellite dependencies.
