Broadcast Solutions successfully deployed Studio Automated’s AI-driven camera platform and an Egripment HotHead 3 for the tactical feed of the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. The system utilizes computer vision on local hardware to automate framing, demonstrating a viable path for integrating AI-assisted production into professional live sports workflows.
This deployment marks a transition for automated cinematography from experimental demonstrations to functional roles in high-tier live sports. By utilizing local hardware instead of cloud-based processing, the system addresses the latency requirements critical for fast-moving football matches. For the broader streaming ecosystem, this technology offers a path to maintain high-quality multi-camera coverage for niche or lower-budget events where full manual crews are cost-prohibitive. It positions automation as a capacity multiplier rather than a direct replacement for human directors. Watch for the upcoming IBC 2026 demonstrations to see if these integrated workflows can maintain tracking accuracy during complex, high-speed player transitions.
Studio Automated's Supercup deployment arrives amid a broader wave of AI-driven camera automation in live sports broadcasting. The company's platform uses computer vision running on local hardware to control robotic camera heads without cloud connectivity, a design choice that mirrors the latency constraints facing other automated production vendors. In parallel, Nokia and Google Cloud announced at DTW Ignite 2026 a suite of six AI agents for autonomous network operations, demonstrating how agentic AI is being embedded into infrastructure layers that support live video delivery, from network assurance to real-time orchestration. While Nokia's agents target telecom operations rather than camera control, the underlying pattern of embedding autonomous decision-making into production-critical systems reflects the same architectural philosophy Studio Automated applies to framing and tracking.
The business case for automated camera systems in sports is being validated by cost pressures across the production chain. Ericsson launched its AI in RAN commercial software subscription in June 2026, claiming up to 20% higher downlink throughput across more than 15 live deployments, illustrating how AI-driven automation is being commercialized through subscription models in adjacent infrastructure markets. For sports broadcasters, the economics are similar: a single AI-controlled camera head like the Egripment HotHead 3 can replace a dedicated operator for tactical feeds, reducing per-match crew costs while maintaining broadcast-quality framing. The Supercup deployment positions Studio Automated and Broadcast Solutions to compete for contracts where manual multi-camera coverage is financially unviable, particularly in lower-tier leagues and pre-season tournaments.
Technical validation of AI camera systems in live sports remains the critical hurdle for wider adoption. Nokia's Autonomous Network Fabric, built with AWS and Databricks, claims operators are achieving automation rates above 90% and service interruption periods of one minute per year or fewer, setting a benchmark for reliability that production-side automation must eventually match. For Studio Automated's system, the Supercup represented a controlled but demanding test: fast player transitions, set pieces with rapid positional changes, and the need for consistent framing without manual intervention. The fact that the system ran entirely on local hardware without cloud dependency eliminates a key failure mode that has limited earlier automated camera attempts in live environments. Upcoming demonstrations at IBC 2026 will provide the next public benchmark for whether this approach generalizes beyond a single high-profile match. As these tools mature, AI sports analytics integration is expected to further enhance the value of these automated feeds by overlaying real-time data directly onto the camera output.
An AI-powered camera system successfully managed the international tactical feed for the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. By integrating Studio Automated’s computer vision with Egripment’s remote hardware, the system provided automated framing on local hardware. This development is significant as it offers a low-latency, cost-effective solution for high-quality live sports production.
The feed was powered by Studio Automated’s computer vision platform integrated with an Egripment HotHead 3 remote camera head.
No, the system operates entirely on local, on-premises hardware to ensure low-latency response times and avoid cloud dependency.
Automated framing is determined by broadcast production principles and scene analysis rather than simple ball tracking.
No, Sportcast utilized the technology as a supplemental source, allowing the production team to retain final editorial control.
