Acast has expanded its video distribution and monetization tools for Apple Podcasts to all creators, following a successful beta period that saw increased engagement. The platform integrates Apple's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology to enable synchronized audio and video ad campaigns, expanding reach for its network of over 4,000 advertisers.
This move signals the end of the 'audio-only' era for legacy podcast platforms as they defensive-position against YouTube and Spotify. By standardizing HLS-based video ad delivery, Acast is commoditizing high-margin video inventory within a traditionally audio-centric app. For the broader ecosystem, this validates the 'hybrid' consumption model where 80% of listeners now watch and listen interchangeably. Success here will be measured by whether Apple Podcasts can convert this technical parity into a meaningful reclaim of the creator market share it has steadily lost to YouTube's search-driven discovery engine. Watch for Acast’s next quarterly ARPU figures to see if video CPMs can offset rising production overhead for independent creators.
The expansion follows a transformative year for podcasting's visual pivot. Per Spotify's Q3 2025 reporting, the platform now hosts nearly 500,000 video podcast shows, a figure that nearly doubled in just 18 months. Spotify also noted that 40% of users who started a new show in 2024 chose a video-enabled format, reflecting a decisive shift in discovery preferences among younger demographics. This surge has forced legacy aggregators to update their technical stacks to support synchronized visual assets.
Acast’s financial trajectory mirrors this market evolution. In February 2026, the company reported 29% net sales growth for the full year 2025, reaching roughly $256 million and achieving its first full year of positive adjusted operating profit. The company has aggressively pursued omnichannel distribution, including a January 2026 partnership with Spotify to allow Acast creators to publish and monetize video content directly through Spotify's Distribution API. This interoperability is becoming a baseline requirement as the industry moves toward programmatic buying for both audio and video inventory.
Competitive pressure from YouTube remains the primary catalyst for these infrastructure upgrades. According to a 2025 study from Coleman Insights and Amplifi Media, YouTube’s share of U.S. podcast consumption reached 70%, largely due to its superior video recommendation algorithms. While Triton Digital’s 2025 U.S. Podcast Report confirms that audio-only listening still holds a larger reach than exclusive video watching, the 76% of consumers who now engage with both formats has turned video from a premium add-on into a critical retention lever for platforms like Apple Podcasts.
