CDN77 is a content delivery network that differentiates itself through a focus on video delivery, which accounts for 90% of its traffic, and a client-centric approach that sets it apart from larger vendors. The company is consistently ranked among the top 5 CDNs by revenue and has achieved over a decade of profitability and steady growth, demonstrating financial stability. Its network delivers data to a billion unique users daily, serving clients like Starz, Rakuten TV, Udemy, and Sport1. CDN77's flexibility and cost efficiency make it a trusted partner for live and VOD platforms seeking high-performance streaming.
CDN77 engineering details an incident involving a performance degradation in their ClickHouse data pipeline caused by unexpected ZooKeeper load. The issue was triggered by a specific combination of stale client machines sending unmerged data, which led to excessive partitioning and heavy coordination traffic.
This technical explainer by CDN77 details the configuration and protocol optimizations required to achieve sub-5-second or sub-1-second latency using HLS and MPEG-DASH. It highlights key trade-offs in segment duration, transfer encoding, manifest index fetching, and playback buffers.
CDN77 has restructured its delivery pricing model by capping traffic overage fees at the baseline unit rate of a client's plan and allowing monthly plan modifications. This policy has been expanded across all monthly, custom, and high-volume billing tiers to offer streaming providers more predictable content delivery costs.
Content delivery network provider CDN77 has enabled support for Google's gQUIC protocol in its customer control panel. The update serves as an interim step toward full integration of the upcoming, standardized IETF QUIC and HTTP/3 protocols designed to reduce streaming latency and head-of-line blocking.
CDN77 has launched its Edge Computing platform in beta, allowing clients to run custom WebAssembly code and handle HTTP request transformations directly on edge servers. The system integrates Wasmtime into their existing Nginx and OpenResty architecture to execute code with minimal latency overhead.
CDN77 outlines the technical and financial advantages of integrating the Common Media Application Format (CMAF) into VOD workflows, highlighting storage savings and enhanced CDN caching. The analysis also explores remaining roadblocks to wider adoption, specifically the device compatibility issues surrounding unified multi-DRM deployment via AES-128 CBC encryption.
CDN77 has announced that its global network capacity has crossed the 50 Tbps threshold, handling daily traffic peaks of up to 25 Tbps. To optimize costs and scale performance further, the CDN provider plans to transition its core points of presence (PoPs) to 400G Ethernet.
CDN77 conducted live experiments to optimize dynamic content delivery using the QUIC protocol, comparing the performance of Cubic, BBRv1, and BBRv2 congestion control algorithms across global Points of Presence. The study revealed that BBRv1 achieved a larger congestion window size (CWND) and outperformed BBRv2 in Europe, North America, and the Middle East, while BBRv2 performed better in Asia by maintaining a more stable connection window.
