Warner Bros. Discovery has introduced curated, always-on linear channels to the Discovery+ streaming service, including new live programming from NASA+. The platform update incorporates Dolby Vision support for these specific feeds, utilizing existing infrastructure to enhance the playback experience.
Warner Bros. Discovery is leveraging its deep unscripted library to capture 'lean-back' viewers who are increasingly fatigued by on-demand selection. By integrating these channels directly into Discovery+, WBD is effectively creating a hybrid environment that mimics the friction-free experience of traditional cable while utilizing the precision of digital ad insertion. This move signals a broader industry trend where premium SVOD services are adopting FAST-style (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV) discovery mechanics to improve retention and average time spent per user. The inclusion of NASA+ in Dolby Vision also serves as a high-fidelity technical showcase for the platform’s live-streaming infrastructure. Watch for WBD to track how these channels impact churn rates compared to purely on-demand usage.
The expansion of linear channels within subscription platforms coincides with a significant shift in audience behavior. Per MediaPost in July 2026, nearly 40% of linear audiences now access television channels via streaming apps, an increase from 38% a year prior. This migration is driving massive growth in the connected TV (CTV) advertising market, which is projected to reach $38 billion in U.S. spending by the end of 2026. Industry data indicates that ad-supported tiers and FAST-style discovery are critical for scaling global platforms as traditional cable continues its structural decline.
Warner Bros. Discovery specifically reported in its Q2 2026 shareholder letter that while its linear network revenues fell by 9%, its streaming segment achieved a profit of $512 million. Executives characterized 2026 as an 'inflection point' where the company expects to deliver more first-run content to streaming platforms than to traditional broadcast and cable networks combined for the first time. The addition of curated channels to Discovery+ is a direct attempt to recapture the high-margin engagement formerly found in cable bundles.
Furthermore, the NASA+ partnership highlights a growing trend of integrating high-value, non-exclusive live content to bolster platform utility. Per Space.com and NASA data from May 2026, the Artemis II mission reached nearly 150 million viewers across various digital platforms. By securing exclusive Dolby Vision coverage for the 2027 Artemis III mission on HBO Max and Discovery+, WBD is positioning its streaming services as the premier destination for high-fidelity event television that traditional linear networks struggle to replicate.
