Phoronix published benchmarking data comparing video encoding performance between Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Windows 11 Pro on Intel Xeon 678x hardware. The results indicate that Ubuntu generally leads in SVT-AV1 and OpenAPV encoding tasks, while Windows 11 shows superior performance in certain Kvazaar H.265 scenarios.
The findings confirm that Ubuntu remains the more efficient platform for high-throughput SVT-AV1 workflows, which are increasingly critical for reducing CDN costs. For streaming engineers, the performance gap underscores how OS-level kernel optimizations—likely stemming from Linux 7.0's improved scheduling—impact encoding density on new silicon like Intel's Xeon 6 series. While Windows 11 remains competitive in legacy H.265 (HEVC) pipelines, the shift toward royalty-free AV1 favors a Linux-first deployment strategy. Strategists should monitor whether Microsoft addresses these scheduling inefficiencies in upcoming Windows 11 workstation updates to prevent further erosion of the media production market share.
The benchmarked Intel Xeon 678x, part of the Granite Rapids-WS lineup released in February 2026, features 48 performance cores and a 360W maximum turbo power, per Intel documentation. This hardware supports advanced instructions like AVX-512 and AMX, which are vital for modern video and AI workloads. Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, codenamed “Resolute Raccoon,” was officially released in April 2026, introducing Linux kernel 7.0 and specialized optimizations for new Intel silicon, according to Canonical’s release notes.
Related reporting from Phoronix in April 2026 indicated that Ubuntu 26.04 frequently leads Windows 11 in creator-focused workstation tasks, including rendering and data processing. Meanwhile, the streaming industry’s adoption of AV1 reached a turning point in mid-2026; per Forasoft, YouTube now encodes over 75% of its catalog in AV1. Samsung also accelerated the ecosystem by standardizing the OpenAPV codec as RFC 9924 in February 2026, aimed at providing a royalty-free alternative for professional recording and post-production, as detailed by Samsung Research.
