Smart TV home screen advertising becomes the new front door for discovery

Smart TV home screen advertising becomes the new front door for discovery
Cord Cutters News

TV manufacturers and streaming platform operators are increasingly monetizing home screen real estate through programmatic advertising and featured promotions. This shift targets viewers during the discovery phase, as data indicates consumers spend significant time navigating interfaces before launching specific streaming applications.

Key Takeaways

  • TiVo reports that 40% of viewers browse two to three different apps before selecting content to watch
  • Samsung Ads recently opened its home screen inventory to programmatic advertising to capture early viewer attention
  • LG Ad Solutions research found that 51% of its Smart TV users pay active attention to home screen promotions
  • Nielsen's Gracenote found that nearly 20% of viewers stop watching entirely when content discovery becomes too difficult

Why It Matters

The shift toward Smart TV home screen advertising represents a strategic move to capture viewers during the 'first impression' moment before they commit to a specific streaming service. As platforms like Roku and Amazon Fire TV integrate full-screen video ads, the interface is evolving from a utility menu into a high-value programmatic inventory source. This ecosystem shift forces streaming services to compete for visibility at the OS level rather than just within their own apps. Watch for whether rising consumer privacy concerns and ad fatigue lead to a regulatory crackdown on Automatic Content Recognition tracking used to power these targeted home screen placements.

Additional Context

Samsung Ads is making its home screen ad placements available through programmatic buying for the first time, integrating with The Trade Desk and Google DV360 via Magnite's SpringServe ad serving technology. Samsung announced that programmatic access to home screen inventory across all global regions will begin rolling out in Q3 2025, marking the largest-scale opening of TV home screen inventory to automated buying channels to date. Eldad Persky, Senior Vice President of Global Product, Engineering and Business Development for Samsung Electronics, described the home screen as one of the most valuable ad units in streaming, combining exceptional visibility with high consumer attention at the very start of the entertainment experience. The move positions Samsung's interface as a premium, non-skippable placement that extends campaign reach beyond traditional in-stream CTV inventory.

TiVo Ads has taken a parallel path by partnering with OpenGlass to make premium TV home screen advertising inventory programmatically available at scale in the U.S. The offering gives brands access to TiVo's home screen inventory across millions of U.S. households, powered by TiVo's pay TV operator partnerships and front-of-screen presence. While home screen advertising has historically been dominated by media and entertainment brands, the new solution expands access to advertisers across retail, automotive, finance, travel, telecommunications, and consumer goods verticals. Advertisers can now deploy larger ad experiences covering up to 90% of the screen, rich video formats, and custom-branded end screens designed to drive stronger engagement and brand impact.

The programmatic opening of home screen inventory reflects a broader industry shift toward monetizing the discovery phase of TV viewing. Samsung's head of ads business development Youssef Ben-Youssef noted that the likelihood of viewer engagement with home screen ad units is much higher than traditional in-stream video CTV ads because viewers see those units immediately upon turning on their TVs. The IAB is working on developing technical standards for home screen ads within its CTV ad portfolio, but Samsung opted not to wait for those standards to finalize before launching. Will Doherty, SVP of Inventory Partnerships at The Trade Desk, emphasized that programmatic access gives advertisers a unified view of both the creative experience and the measurement experience, enabling them to assess how home screen placements drive recall, awareness, and frequency impact across campaigns. As these buying models mature, Nexxen Smart TV ad standardization is helping to unify the fragmented landscape for OEMs.
