Santa Barbara television station KSBB-CD has adopted SiliconDust’s ATSC3CA signal signing certificates to authenticate its NextGen TV broadcasts. The implementation utilizes a cloud-based OCSP infrastructure across 30 data centers to ensure broadcast compliance and receiver compatibility during network failures.
The adoption of SiliconDust’s certificate authority by a News Press & Gazette station signals a shift toward cloud-native security solutions for local broadcasters managing the NextGen TV transition. By utilizing 30 data centers for signal authentication, the station addresses a critical vulnerability where network failures could lead to consumer receivers blocking legitimate broadcasts. This move highlights the growing role of third-party certificate authorities in the ATSC 3.0 ecosystem as stations move beyond initial testing to long-term compliance. Watch for whether SiliconDust can leverage these broadcaster partnerships to resolve ongoing certification hurdles for its own HDHomeRun consumer hardware.
SiliconDust's ATSC3CA certificate authority is one of several providers competing to secure the NextGen TV broadcast chain. The ATSC 3.0 standard requires all broadcast signals to carry valid cryptographic signatures so that compliant receivers can distinguish legitimate transmissions from spoofed or unauthorized content. SiliconDust, best known for its HDHomeRun network tuners, entered the certificate authority space to serve smaller broadcasters who lack the engineering resources of large station groups. The company's cloud-based OCSP infrastructure, distributed across 30 data centers, is designed to maintain receiver trust even when individual network paths fail. This approach contrasts with on-premises signing solutions that some larger broadcasters have deployed internally.
The broader ATSC 3.0 rollout continues to face regulatory and commercial headwinds. The FCC has not mandated a hard transition deadline for ATSC 3.0, leaving broadcasters to adopt NextGen TV voluntarily while maintaining legacy ATSC 1.0 simulcasts. This dual-carriage requirement increases operational costs for stations like KSBB-CD, making lightweight, cloud-managed security tools attractive. Meanwhile, the consumer device ecosystem remains limited. SiliconDust's HDHomeRun tuners have faced certification challenges with some ATSC 3.0 receiver compliance programs, though the company's certificate authority business operates independently of its hardware division. The separation allows SiliconDust to serve broadcasters even as its tuner products navigate their own approval processes.
On the technical side, ATSC 3.0 signal signing relies on a public key infrastructure where certificate authorities issue and revoke digital certificates tied to individual stations. Receivers check certificate validity through OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) queries, and if a receiver cannot confirm a certificate's status, it may block the signal entirely. This creates a critical dependency: any outage in the OCSP infrastructure can render legitimate broadcasts invisible to viewers. SiliconDust's multi-data-center approach aims to eliminate that single point of failure. The deployment at KSBB-CD represents a real-world test of whether distributed cloud OCSP can deliver the uptime guarantees that broadcasters need for 24/7 linear television, a standard that differs significantly from typical web service availability targets.
