The San Antonio Spurs have signed an exclusive direct-to-consumer streaming deal with DAZN for the 2026-27 season, covering local market games and original content. The organization will manage game production in-house, with the agreement including an exit clause tied to the potential launch of an NBA centralized local broadcast hub.
The San Antonio Spurs joining the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Indiana Pacers on DAZN signals a consolidated migration of NBA local rights away from traditional regional sports networks. By bringing production in-house, the Spurs are reclaiming control over their brand presentation while utilizing DAZN's infrastructure for distribution. This shift highlights a transitional period for local sports media, where teams prioritize short-term reach through established streamers while maintaining flexibility via exit clauses. The industry should monitor the 2027-28 season as the likely inflection point for a league-wide centralized streaming solution that could supersede these individual team deals.
DAZN has rapidly assembled a portfolio of NBA local streaming rights that positions it as the leading direct-to-consumer alternative to traditional regional sports networks. The platform's expansion into US local sports follows a broader pattern: DAZN signed the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Indiana Pacers to exclusive local streaming deals across the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons, making the Spurs the fourth franchise to adopt the model. Each agreement follows a similar structure where the team retains production control while DAZN handles distribution, subscriber management, and monetization. The pattern suggests DAZN is building a standardized operational playbook that could scale across additional franchises if the NBA does not intervene with a centralized solution.
The business case for DAZN's NBA push rests on its existing global sports infrastructure and its willingness to absorb distribution costs that teams previously shouldered through RSN carriage fees. DAZN reported that its global subscriber base surpassed 20 million paying users in early 2026, a milestone that gives the company leverage when negotiating local rights deals that serve as acquisition funnels for its broader combat sports, football, and boxing catalog. The company's co-CEO Shay Segev has publicly framed local sports rights as a subscriber acquisition channel rather than a standalone profit center, a strategy that differs fundamentally from the RSN model's dependence on per-subscriber affiliate fees. This approach allows DAZN to offer teams guaranteed rights payments while betting that bundled content will convert casual local fans into long-term subscribers.
The technical and operational model DAZN is deploying for NBA local rights mirrors approaches it has tested in European football markets. DAZN's production technology stack, including its proprietary OTT platform and cloud-based workflow tools, processed more than 1.2 billion streams globally in 2025, demonstrating the scale required to handle multiple simultaneous local broadcasts. For the Spurs specifically, the in-house production arrangement means the team controls camera angles, graphics packages, and commentary talent while DAZN provides encoding, content delivery, and subscriber-facing applications. The exit clause tied to a potential NBA centralized local broadcast hub reflects a broader league conversation: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver indicated in July 2026 that the league is evaluating a unified streaming distribution model for local games, which could consolidate all local rights under a single platform by the 2028-29 season at the earliest.
