Broadcasters including NBCUniversal and Sinclair are transitioning to storycentric workflows that unify linear and digital news production through cloud-based systems and agentic AI. This shift aims to reduce operational silos and automate content distribution across multiple platforms, including FAST channels.
The shift toward storycentric news workflows marks a definitive move away from the legacy silos that have historically separated broadcast and digital teams. By utilizing cloud-hosted applications and agentic AI, stations can now treat a single story as a versatile asset for linear, social, and FAST endpoints simultaneously. This interoperability reduces the friction of manual reformatting and allows local broadcasters to scale their presence on connected TV platforms without proportional increases in headcount. As Sinclair and NBCUniversal demonstrate, the primary hurdle is now cultural change management rather than technical 'glue.' Watch for the IBC Incubator’s demonstration of the Story Object Model next month to see if cross-vendor standardization gains broader industry adoption.
The SMART Stories consortium, announced on 30 April 2026 by AP, NBCUniversal, ITN, and the BBC, represents the most concrete attempt to standardize storycentric news workflows at the infrastructure level. The project now counts more than a dozen broadcasters and vendors as champions and participants, including Al Jazeera, Washington Post, Channel 4, ITV, Sky, EBU, SMPTE, Reuters, Shure, EVS, Cuez, Moments Lab, and AWS, making it the broadest cross-industry effort to define how story context moves between production systems. The IBC2026 Accelerator page describes the initiative as defining an open standard for story context interoperability in live production, with a live multi-vendor demo planned for Amsterdam in September that will showcase agents running on SOM data across breaking news and planned coverage scenarios.
On the technical architecture side, the Story Object Model uses a conflict-free replicated data type, the same data structure that powers Google Docs and Figma, to allow multiple AI agents to edit the same story simultaneously without overwriting each other's work. At the mpts.london conference on 14 May, an EVS-led whiteboard revealed the SOM's three-region runtime architecture, splitting operations into LIVE (ingest and reasoning agents), NEARLIVE (Moments Lab metadata indexing with Local and Regional SOM sync), and DISTRO (Skills-driven output adapters for web, search, and distribution channels). The consortium is positioning SOM as the successor to MOS and JSON-over-APIs in broadcast's data evolution, aiming to solve shared meaning rather than just transport.
From a business and governance perspective, the project's Skills reference architecture allows broadcasters to encode editorial rules as portable, machine-readable configurations while keeping proprietary judgment inside their own organizations. The IBC Incubator team confirmed that the schema has reached version 0.3 and that NBCUniversal has already integrated SOM into its internal platform, with vendors beginning to connect and broadcasters testing implementations. The governance question of which standards body (SMPTE, AMWA NMOS, EBU, or a new entity) will oversee the specification remains open, and the full proof of concept is due at IBC2026 from 11 to 14 September. For broadcasters like Sinclair evaluating storycentric transitions, the existence of a cross-vendor standard reduces the risk of platform lock-in that has historically slowed adoption of unified newsroom systems.
