Meta and Google have submitted an IETF Internet-Draft proposing a standardized timestamp property for Media Over QUIC Transport (MOQT). The proposal aims to improve interoperability and latency visibility by providing a unified representation for media timing across different specifications.
Standardizing how Media Over QUIC Transport handles timing addresses a critical fragmentation issue where different specifications currently use incompatible timestamp properties. By providing a single, general representation that Relays can interpret without modifying, this proposal enables more efficient age-based delivery decisions at the network edge. For the broader ecosystem, this move by Meta and Google signals a push toward mature, interoperable QUIC-based streaming that could eventually replace legacy protocols in live environments. Watch for the IETF Media Over QUIC Working Group's review of the draft-frindell-moq-timestamp-00 submission through April 2027.
