Lawo is showcasing its Dynamic Media Facility approach and the European debut of the Edge One IP connectivity platform at IBC2026. The exhibition also highlights new graphics-oriented HOME apps and expanded multi-vendor interoperability through a collaboration with Grass Valley.
Lawo is shifting the broadcast infrastructure focus from fixed hardware to software-defined resource pools. By integrating graphics into its microservices-based HOME ecosystem, the company allows broadcasters to spin up branding and compositing tools on demand rather than relying on dedicated processing units. This transition, reinforced by the collaboration with Grass Valley, signals a move toward multi-vendor interoperability that aligns with EBU standards for dynamic media facilities. For the industry, this reduces the total cost of ownership by maximizing hardware utilization across central and remote sites. Watch for the ratification of EBU Media eXchange Layer (MXL) standards as a catalyst for wider multi-vendor adoption.
The push for software-defined broadcast environments has gained significant momentum through the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) initiative. Per The Broadcast Bridge in February 2026, the DMF framework aims to replace monolithic hardware with virtualized containers orchestrated via Kubernetes, using the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) as the 'technical glue' for content sharing. This architectural shift is designed to address the scalability limits of traditional SDI and early IP facilities by allowing resources to be brought online only when required for specific productions.
Industry participation in these open standards is expanding beyond infrastructure specialists. According to SVG Europe in January 2026, the DMF initiative is being shaped by major broadcasters including the BBC, France Télévisions, and Olympic Broadcasting Services. These organizations are testing DMF pilots to manage the extreme peaks of international sports events. The collaboration between Lawo and Grass Valley, announced in June 2026, represents one of the first major commercial validations of this multi-vendor approach, focusing on interoperability between Grass Valley's AMPP cloud platform and Lawo’s on-premises HOME orchestration layer.
Furthermore, the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) and the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) have been actively promoting the DMF concept to solve business challenges related to resource sharing. Per Broadcast Dialogue in July 2026, CBS/Paramount executives emphasized that DMF is the key to unlocking the practical benefits of IP infrastructure, moving beyond simple connectivity to true operational flexibility. The move toward software-based graphics and processing microservices allows media companies to transition their spend from capital-heavy hardware to flexible, license-based operational models.
