Globo utilized MediaKind's XOS and Spectrum for DTV+ lighthouse broadcasts and VOS360 for low-latency streaming during the World Cup. The deployment achieved five-second latency for millions of concurrent viewers, highlighting the simultaneous advancement of broadcast and streaming infrastructure in Brazil.
The achievement of five-second latency at a scale of millions of concurrent viewers effectively closes the experience gap between traditional broadcast and digital streaming. By deploying MediaKind VOS360 alongside DTV+ lighthouse stations, Globo is proving that high-quality 4K broadcast and low-latency streaming can advance in parallel rather than as competing silos. This dual-track infrastructure strategy addresses the 'spoiler effect' where digital delays lag behind terrestrial signals, a critical requirement for high-stakes live sports. Watch for whether these low-latency benchmarks become the standard requirement for future Tier-1 sports rights tenders in the Latin American market.
Globo's World Cup deployment sits within a broader ecosystem of broadcasters and technology vendors racing to build out Brazil's DTV+ infrastructure. The SBTVD Forum formally recommended the ATSC 3.0 physical layer after laboratory and field testing in which it outperformed alternatives such as Advanced ISDB-T, DTMB-A, and 5G Broadcast in spectral efficiency and mobile reception. Major Brazilian broadcasters have already demonstrated 4K and 8K content over the standard, and deployment timelines were set to align with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, creating one of the fastest large-scale NextGen TV rollouts globally. MediaKind's XOS and Spectrum platforms are now part of that live production chain, giving the vendor a reference deployment at the scale of a global sporting event.
The regulatory foundation for Globo's DTV+ broadcasts traces to a presidential decree signed by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on August 27, 2025, which established the ATSC 3.0-based DTV+ system as Brazil's television format of the future. Experimental broadcasts were already on air in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo at the time of signing, with commercial services anticipated to begin in time for the World Cup. The NAB noted that Brazil's scale, with over 70 million TV households and roughly 80 percent of the population relying on terrestrial broadcasting, creates a larger market for ATSC 3.0-compatible hardware and software that could drive down costs through economies of scale. Industry estimates place the nationwide rollout investment at as much as BRL 11 billion (approximately USD 2 billion), with the Telecommunications Ministry seeking federal credit lines to support the transition.
From a technical standpoint, Brazil's DTV+ system uses ATSC 3.0 technologies across its core physical and transport layers as well as video, audio, captioning, and emergency warning systems, according to ATSC. The standard's flexibility was a key factor in Brazil's selection, as ATSC President Madeleine Noland stated the decision underscores the standard's ability to meet the needs of a large and diverse country with high reliance on terrestrial viewing. For MediaKind, the Globo deployment validates its encoding and playout stack under real-world conditions: five-second latency at millions of concurrent viewers on VOS360, combined with 4K DTV+ lighthouse playout on Spectrum and XOS. The Brazilian report noted that , meaning early adopters like Globo will define performance benchmarks that other broadcasters reference as they plan their own transitions.
