Foundry has launched Griptape, an AI orchestration platform designed to integrate multiple AI models into secure, repeatable workflows for VFX and animation studios. The platform features a node-based UI and integrates with Foundry's existing tools like Nuke, Mari, and Katana, with an enterprise tier offering on-premises deployment and granular permission controls.
The launch of Griptape addresses the critical need for security and repeatability as studios move beyond experimental AI use toward production-grade integration. By providing a centralized orchestration layer, Foundry enables technical directors to vet specific models and control artist access, mitigating the legal and technical risks associated with fragmented AI tools. This move signals a shift in the streaming production ecosystem toward standardized AI middleware that bridges the gap between raw generative models and established creative software like Katana. Watch for how quickly major animation houses adopt the enterprise tier to automate repetitive tasks like generating tileable textures and CEL expressions.
The broader market for AI in visual effects is expanding rapidly. The global AI in VFX market is projected to reach $1.07 billion by 2032, driven largely by generative tools that automate asset creation and motion enhancement while preserving artist control, according to Valuates Reports, July 2026. This growth trajectory creates pressure on pipeline vendors to offer production-ready orchestration rather than experimental point solutions.
Foundry's acquisition of Griptape in February 2026 was part of a larger consolidation trend among creative software vendors seeking AI capabilities. Griptape was originally a Seattle-based startup founded by former AWS executives, having raised $12.5 million from investors including Fuse and Acequia Capital in 2023, per GeekWire, February 2026. The company positioned itself as a secure, enterprise-grade alternative to open-source frameworks like LangChain, targeting organizations that needed audit trails and compliance controls around generative AI usage.
The competitive landscape for AI pipeline orchestration in media production is intensifying. AWS Thinkbox Deadline Cloud recently assisted Netflix in reducing VFX rendering costs by 70% through on-demand GPU scaling, per SNS Insider, January 2026. Cloud hyperscalers are positioning their own orchestration layers as alternatives to vendor-specific solutions, creating a tension between on-premises security (Foundry's pitch) and cloud cost efficiency (AWS's pitch). Studios with high-value IP—particularly those producing franchise content for streaming platforms—have historically favored on-premises workflows to prevent leaks, which gives Foundry's enterprise tier a structural advantage in that segment.
The appointment of Kyle Roche as Chief AI Officer signals Foundry's intent to build AI orchestration as a long-term strategic pillar rather than a feature add-on. Roche co-founded Griptape and joined Foundry following the acquisition, per Foundry's announcement, August 2026. His mandate includes Foundry Research initiatives, suggesting the company plans to develop proprietary AI capabilities beyond orchestration, potentially including custom models trained on production data.
Griptape's support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) places it within an emerging standard for agentic AI workflows. MCP enables AI agents to interface directly with diverse creative applications, and Griptape integrates with common DCCs such as Nuke, Maya, and Blender, as well as production management systems like Flow Production Tracking, per Foundry's product documentation, August 2026. This positions the platform as a potential middleware layer that could standardize how AI agents interact across the entire production pipeline, not just within a single application.
