Apple has announced the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, powered by the new A19 chip which includes a dedicated AV1 hardware decoder. The device also features far-field microphones for hands-free Siri control and supports a new four-speaker surround sound configuration with HomePod speakers.
The inclusion of a dedicated AV1 decoder addresses the industry-wide shift toward more efficient codecs, allowing Apple to maintain high-fidelity video streams while lowering data overhead. By integrating far-field microphones and four-speaker surround sound support, Apple is positioning the device as a premium smart home hub rather than a simple streaming puck. This move reinforces a walled-garden strategy where the best audio-visual experience requires multiple proprietary hardware units like the HomePod mini 2. As the $299 price point sits well above competitors, the market will now watch for whether AV1 adoption and hands-free utility can justify the premium to high-end consumers. Monitor November 13 sales data to gauge early adoption of this high-margin hardware tier.
