The Alliance for Open Media has released the Open Audio Renderer (OAR) v1, a reference implementation for rendering spatial audio based on the IAMF specification. This release provides developers with an interoperable baseline for spatial audio across diverse playback hardware, including loudspeakers and headphones.
The release of OAR v1 provides the missing link for a fully open-source spatial audio stack, allowing manufacturers to implement immersive sound without the licensing fees associated with Dolby Atmos. By establishing a shared baseline for rendering IAMF content, AOMedia is lowering the technical barrier for mid-tier device makers to offer premium audio features. This move accelerates the shift toward royalty-free standards in the audio domain, mirroring the influence of AV1 in video. Watch for a rise in IAMF-native hardware announcements throughout 2026, particularly from AOMedia members looking to bypass proprietary certification costs.
The release of OAR v1 follows a concerted effort by AOMedia members Google and Samsung to challenge Dolby’s dominance in the $8 billion spatial audio market. In early 2025, the two companies introduced Eclipsa Audio, a commercial branding of the IAMF standard. Per Google, Samsung integrated Eclipsa support across its 2025 TV and soundbar lineup, while YouTube began accepting spatial audio uploads based on the open format. This hardware-software push is designed to create a self-sustaining ecosystem where creators can author immersive content without licensing overhead.
Recent industry shifts underscore the growing competition between open and proprietary formats. Per SMPTE reporting in March 2026, LG followed Samsung by adding IAMF support to its 2026 TV models, while Google committed to OS-level playback in Android 16 and Chrome. Simultaneously, terrestrial broadcasters in regions like Brazil and South Korea are leaning into MPEG-H, another alternative to Dolby Atmos, for next-generation DTV+ services. Samsung notably joined the MPEG-H Trademark Program in July 2026 to ensure its hardware remains compatible with these international broadcast mandates.
Adoption of open standards like IAMF and OAR is also being driven by the expansion of True Wireless Stereo (TWS) and mobile streaming. Per Market Research Future, semiconductor giants like Qualcomm and MediaTek have invested over $400 million since 2023 in hybrid silicon-and-software stacks that allow for over-the-air firmware updates of new audio codecs. As spatial audio moves from a niche premium feature to a mass-market requirement, the availability of royalty-free reference tools like OAR v1 allows these chipmakers to scale immersive capabilities across lower-margin device segments.
