AI music detection study finds 38.5% of July releases used synthetic audio

The high volume of synthetic content creates an immediate verification burden for distributors like Bandcamp and Spotify, who must now balance platform integrity with massive upload scales. As AI-generated music surpasses 50% of daily uploads on services like Deezer, the streaming ecosystem faces a fundamental shift toward tiered royalty structures that prioritize human-verified assets. This trend suggests a move away from the traditional pro-rata model toward one that penalizes or demonetizes undisclosed synthetic audio. Watch for the adoption of EU AI Act disclosure rules across Apple Music and Google to see if consumer behavior shifts when AI involvement is explicitly disclosed.

Deezer has emerged as the most aggressive platform in addressing synthetic content at scale. In January 2026, Deezer began licensing its AI music detection tool to other companies across the music ecosystem, after using it internally to tag more than 13.4 million AI-generated tracks during 2025. The company reports that over 60,000 AI-generated tracks are uploaded to its platform daily, representing roughly 39% of daily intake, and that up to 85% of streams on fully AI-generated music are identified as fraudulent and excluded from royalty calculations.

The commercial licensing move positions Deezer as an infrastructure provider for AI music detection beyond its own platform. TechCrunch reported that Deezer's tool claims 99.8% accuracy in identifying AI-generated tracks from major generative models like Suno and Udio, and that the French rights society Sacem, representing over 300,000 creators, has already completed successful tests with the technology. Meanwhile, major labels have taken a different approach: Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group struck licensing deals with Suno and Udio in late 2025, signaling that the industry is bifurcating between detection-and-exclusion strategies and licensing-and-compensation frameworks.

On the consumer side, Deezer's data reveals a significant awareness gap. In June 2026, Deezer launched a free playlist checker after finding that 97% of listeners cannot distinguish AI-generated music from human-created music in blind tests, while 80% of listeners believe AI-generated music should be clearly labeled on platforms. The company also found that 43% of users switching to Deezer already carry AI tracks in their playlists from other services. These figures underscore why SubmitHub's finding that 38.5% of July 2026 releases contain synthetic audio represents not just a supply-side problem but a consumer-trust challenge that no single platform can solve alone.
